It's a long walk to the Baja Peninsula... It's even longer to the Bahamas... and wet too

Hey Mom...

I really don't think having your rods in clear bags will solve your problem. The screeners will still take them out and screw around with the sections as common sense isn't always prevelent in those places.

Eddie I didn't mean to make light of your quandry. I just couldn't think of a better way. I have carried on rods with out the tube (4pc 9' and 4 pc 12' and an Atlantis 11'). It seemed sketchy at first, but I just took a little more care. I used a sock, but I don't see how it would be different wrapping them with some velcro. They don't seem to count the low profile rods as an carry on item. They probably would if they were in an abel case. God forbid they make me gate check them with out hard shell. small commuters seem ok. I can't even get my camera bag on those.
Lately I have been checking rolling lugage that can hold 3 and 4 pc rods undernieth (sage and william joseph). Some fat pvc irrigation tube or pvc fence post and it is pretty much bomb proof. The WJ roller (3pc rods) is freaking huge. Everyone hates you when they seee it. No breaks from anyone. No way to keep it unde max weight, so now i just count on payng the 20 bucks extra.

Having said that, I always seem to be carrying a rod or five on board too. I suppose there are worse problems to have.

This is for making it through the airport only... Not intended for fishing. When I travel for fishing personally, rod tubes don't get onto the boat. I guess you could perforate it and include a dessicant if you wanted to.

If you haven't had your rods manhandled, you are lucky indeed. Especially as you seem to travel a bit. Nothing like seeing someone holding onto the very tip of your top section, and watching them try to shove it back into the sock, or better yet supporting the whole weight of the rest of the rod

I have never really had a problem with rods (except for once a month afr Sept.11). My micro-leather man that slipped into a cranny in my vest on the otherhand....then there was the serrated spatula that I carried on for my wife. Looked like a cerimonial beheading instrument. That got their attention...and didn't get on the plane.

What the traveling fly fisher needs...

Well, it's what I need anyway. A high quality clear rod sock that doesn't get all nasty in hot conditions. I would love to pass through TSA without some 12 thumbed upright primate having to take my rods out of their cloth rodsock (putting it back in is actually the problem). How cool would it be if they could just slide the sock out of the case and SEE that is in fact a rod and not a REAAAAAAALY skinny improvised explosive device... Any entrepreneurs out there with a plastics connection?
