marabou spiders

pink cactus spider

okay, this isn't a classic marabou spider, but it's a close relative. Looks big and lively in the water, and the marabou doesn't foul as often as my standard marabou spiders do because of the chenille (below).

hook: number 2 wet-fly salmon hook
Thread: orange monocord
Underbody: pink cactus chenille
Body: a single white marabou feather with soft, thin stems and relatively short fibers
Collar: pink schlappen

orange marabou

This is my favorite bright fly pattern. Last April 30th I had an arm-jarring take (but no hookup) fishing this fly behind Skookum on the Sky, a rare occasion when following that fish magnet through a run.

hook: number 2 wet-fly salmon hook
Thread: orange monocord
Body: select 3 marabou feathers with soft, thin stems and relatively short fibers
1 pink, 1 red, 1 flame orange;
Collar: orange schlappen

tie in the base of the pink feather (pointed away from the eye) no more than 1/2" from the hook-eye, then carefully wrap forward without trapping fibers from the previous wraps. I add a couple strands of flashabou then repeat with the red feather, then a couple more flashabou strands, then the orange marabou feather, and finish with a a few turns of flame orange schlappen.

Black and White Marabou

Same fly as above, although this one is tied on a Tiemco 8089 bass bug hook.

hook: number 2 tiemco 8089
Thread: black monocord
Body: 1 white marabou, 1 black marabou, 4 strands of pearl flashabou
Collar: black schlappen
