Adrian For retrieve I strip line rather than twitch the rod too. But then I'll wait - up to a minute before the next retrieve.

I find a lot of hits have come whilst the popper is sitting stationary on the surface.

My experience (so far) confirms this irrespective of the species or environment - Striped Bass, Barracuda and Giant Trevally in saltwater and Smallmouth Bass in fresh.

Full blooded attacks as the bug hits the water are tops

Dble Haul I pull on the line while keeping the rod tip pointed at the popper. This way there's really no slack in the system, and if I pull the line half a foot I know that the popper will move half a foot. Also, the rod is in perfect position for a hookset when a fish takes.

How are you using poppers ?

Are you twitching the rod or pulling on the line ?
