striblue It's about 5 inches... Jared. the sand eel has a white bottom so I thought I would reverse it against the usual thinking. The flash is actually somewhat at the lower middle. also... in a rip the eel turns all over the place. I am also tying this fly without flash and only a white hackle bottom. Unlike a bunker or other bait fish I like to think of the eel somewhat different. I think of flash on the eel as more of an attractor as oppose to sun reflection from the top... just my thinking.

interesting flash position. Normally it's tied as topping rather than the bottom layer....any particular reason?

Long Hackle Sand Eel

Here is another experiment and I liked the way it came out. I took long thin hackles from my Kenny Abrames material and some green/yellow Chenille and made this clouser. I think it will work.
