fisheze Sounds like you're definitely an Exuma veteran! I'm working toward that title!

I can't believe that one of your buddies had a hard time with JJ. He's so laid back. But so is almost everyone over there.
JJ lead me to my first bonefish and even managed to catch a world record on the first time out. There was a vacant slot in the women's 2 lb tippet class. It wasn't easy landing a bonefish on 2 lb tippet...especially for someone who wasn't used to the speed and strenght of bones! But JJ coached me through it and it worked!

You should try Garth sometime. You won't be disappointed. He amazes me on the flats.

Thanks for your guide info. I've heard about Abby...I'd like to try him sometime. We also heard about Willie and requested him the last time we were there. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that there were two Willies at the lodge. We got the wrong one.

I think a LOT of people are breaking away from the Lodge package. You come out cheaper by doing it on your own and you get a better choice in your guides. I'm thrilled that the guides are going on their own now.

Come on down to Florida! The fishing is great! :-)

Adrian I've not fished with JJ but on the one occaision I didn't go, my three UK friends did. Two of them got on really well with him, the other swore he would never fish with him again - it can go like that sometimes

To be fair, all reports from other guests and more importantly, other guides and Bob Hyde put him at or near the top of the Exuma guiding squad. Garth is a new name to me.

My regulars have always been:

Willy Rolle, my personal #1 and the man with whom I'll land my first permit - one day. Alston Rolle, who also a mixes a mean slack tide cocktail.

Robert, a white bahamian who does double duty as occaisional Chef at the Bonefish lodge and the club P&P in Georgetown.

Michael, Martin & Steve who cover the middle flats on the West side.

Abby & Celey who fish the North (Baraterre) and North East area.

This year we're staying at the Seven Sisters at Palm - just North of the Airport and setting up a deal with Abby and other guides as needed. Having done the P&P package about 8 times now, its time to break out and explore

Maybe I'll get a cheap flight down to Florida sometime and get you to show me 'round

fisheze Thanks for the warm welcome Adrian.
The fishing has been great here in Florida. I'm on the SW coast and I take full advantage of the fishery here. We've had an exceptionally warm winter so far so everything is biting. And Snook season opens tomorrow!

I was in the Keys last weekend and the warmth has the bonefish very active. I couldn't get enough so I started planning my next trip to Exuma as soon as I got home!

Have you ever fished with JJ or Garth in Exuma? Great guides. My case you can't tell by the website. Where do you stay when you go over? We're trying a cottage at Master Harbour this time.
Maybe I'll see you over there on the flats some day.

Adrian Thanks for the link - thats a nice site. Good to see the Exuma lads getting their act together.

This particular board mostly gets hit when folks are either planning or returning from specific trips. It will be great to have a representative from the Sunshine State to keep us informed on a more regular basis!

Tell us all about your local fishery, species you like to target, techniques etc. As you've probably gathered by now, those of us located North of the Mason Dixon line tend to get a bit stir crazy up here at this time of year.

fisheze I know what you mean! I usually stay at the Club P&P but I'm going in March and am staying at a Cottage south of the Club. It works out cheaper that way.
I have also found that a lot of the guides are going independent. Hurray for them! Actually a couple of our favorite guides have asked to help them get the word out. Check out
I can't wait to get back over to the friendliest island in the Bahamas!

striblue Adrian... that sounds... so... perfect.. I would like a Bahama trip myself this year... but this may be another family trip.. I look forward to your reports... I loved catching barracuda on the fly.

D.I.Y. Trip to Exuma - April 2nd-9th '02

This year we're doing it ourselves

O.K., I know it's only January but I'm really looking forward to it!

Much as I love the accomodations down at Peace and Plenty, this year we're staying at a small hotel further up the Island ($100/night between 2) and making our own arrangements with a few local guides who we've got to know over the years. Most of the guides on Exuma now operate as independants.

It will be a chance to explore the fishing on the North / Western parts of Great Exuma which are not regularly fished/guided. In addition to a plentiful supply of Bonefish in the 5lb+ range and Barracuda there are Permit, Tarpon, (Grand Slam possibilities!) African Pompano, Mutton Snapper and who knows what else.

I got an email from someone ages ago asking about guide contacts on Exuma but somehow it got deleted before I could get the info. If it was anyone on the forum I apologise and if you still need the info let me know.

I will do a proper write-up of the trip including budget etc. on my return!
