Care and treatment of guides

I'm a newbie with an old Abbey & Imbrie bamboo rod. I'm concerned that the guides have gotten a little rough over the years and was wondering if (1) there's a way to check a guide to be sure it's still smooth to the line, and (2) if there's a preferred way to smooth them if it appears they're snagging the line. Someone told me to run some nylon through them to see if they snag, but I'd like to hear of some other ideas and remedies. Many thanks, Evans!
