BigDave Obviously the best thing is to leave them in the water.

I use a C&R net which is controls the fish but lets me get to the hook.

If you are going to pick the fish up hold them upside down and they wont squirm.

Be sure to wet your hands before touching the fish so you don't remove it's slime coat.

Dble Haul There's no need to take a trout from the water to take the hook from its mouth. Simply contol the fish with a net or your free wet hand and remove the hook with your fingers or hemostats. This way, if you lose control of the fish it doesn't drop on the ground but merely stays in the water to begin with.

If you must remove a fish from the water with your hands, wet them first to help prevent removal of the trout's protective slime coating.

grabbing trout with hands

Im a novice fly-fisherman from south america, Ive gotten better cachting trout, but here goes the embarrasing question: when I take the trout out and hold it in my hands to extract the fly, they almost always wriggle and twist like crazy and I sometimes end up dropping them on the ground. Since Id rather let them go this doesnt help their health... What am I doing wrong?
