flinger88 I bought a Gallatin Onyx. It had a very dull action and felt heavy. I sold it right off. You can find some great rods for $100 or so on Ebay if you're patient. Some good options would be 9 foot 7-8 weights in Diamondback (All American), Scott (SAS), or Loomis (GL2). Good luck!

Smolt I bought two. One has been fine. The other collapsed (broke) just above the handle like a wet reed on the first cast. Warranty appears to be non-existant.

My advice is to spend a little more on an entry level rod from a known manufacturer, like Powell, Albright, or TFO. You may pay two or three times what an Onyx will cost but, IMHO, you get ten times the value.

Gallatin Onyx Rods

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about these rods. I am looking for an entry level (and low budget!!!) 7wt or 8wt for steelheading here in western NY. Are there any other options for me in the low price range (less than 100 for the rod)?
