I am right on 3 o'clock for about 5 seconds then start to drop to about 4:30 and give up by 10 seconds.

Totally with ya on this one.
I can't imagine anything worse then getting to a stage in my life and not being able to fish due to a preventable health issue.
For those who think "yeah, thats fine but its too late for me", let me tell you, its never too late! The human body is an amazing thing.
p.s. How long can you hold the "L" position?

About 10 days of trying and I can now hold the "L" position - suspending the legs off the floor perpendicular to the body.
Also putting these things close together really works a totally different set of muscles than putting them apart.
Also picked up a 'ab wheel' - a small wheel with handles, which I think ran me about $8. However that thing is still getting the better of me!
What does this all have to do with fishing? Well the other day I forgot the sunblock in the parking lot about a mile away from where I was. It was going to be a long hot day and with all the guiding I've been doing over the last several years protecting my skin is no trivial matter. I am seeing the effect of the sun's radiation on my skin in several ways. So I ran to the truck, then ran back. Because I wasted so little time I got more fishing in. Also if I preserve my health I will fish for many years into my retirement, which is a goal of mine. Health means more fishing today, and tomorrow

Push up stands - cheap and good
Push ups are a great way to get some conditioning in where all you need is a little open floor space. However I found that my hands were taking a bit of strain from the floor having committed to 100 on any day where I do not go to the dojo or the gym. Kind of a penalty for not keeping with schedule
Anyway I picked up some foam covered push-up stands to provide a positive gripping device with stability and also give higher clearance which gets more of the pecs involved. It also allows a variety of hand positions and also can be used in the way parallel bars are used, provided you can hold your legs up off the floor out front with the stands by your sides (the gymnastic "ell" position). Even if you can't you can put the heels on the floor and push up and down with the triceps.
About 15 bucks.
