Jim Miller Here are some I tie. biggest is size 10 for comparison.
on small flies I use:
ostrich collar
larva lace over picked dubbing body
hackle or goose biot tail
As mentioned by BobK....just match the size to the stones lying on the snow bank!

Talk about answers....

If you are referring to the same "Little Black Stone" as we have in the East, it's nothing more than a diminutive black stonefly nymph tied in sizes 14, 16 or 18 (depending on river). Deadly as all get out, too, and the GL Steelies love 'em.
Unfortunately, hard to land many due to the small hooks.....

Just use your favorite stone fly recipe, but reduce the size, and use all black material.

Anyway, walking along a snowy stream bank, look for evidence of LOTS of shed cases. Very common late winter-early spring occurrence.

flytyer A more natural looking little black stone is had by tying it on the Tiempco 200R (or similar hook from Daiichi, Targus, Mustad) on size #14-#16 in the style of Randall Kaufmann's STIMULATOR

Tail: dark elk, short
Body: black dubbing, 2/3rd hook shank
Body Hackle: black saddle or neck hackle
Wing: dark elk to end of tail
Thorax: dark grey or black dubbing
Front Hackle: dark grey, black, or grey dyed grizzly

Zonie Sorry only recipe:
Dry fly hook size 10-18, Black thread, Black mink guard hairs for tail, Dark grey or black hen hackle tips tied three quarter spent for wing, Black hackle palmeered through body past wings to the hook eye, black mink dubbing for body. This is a traditional tie so feel free to sub new materials for tail and dubbing.

Little Black Stone

Has anyone ever tried to tie this fly? I can't seem to find a pattern on the net. Does any have any good sites that have pics of a Little Black Stone? I saw a Little Yellow Stone and am wondering if the fly is similar, but black instead of yellow
