The operative element is the Spey line.
They often demand much more capacity, since the rods can handle very long heads, double tapers, etc.
As a general rule for 8wt Spey fishing, the 3.5 can probably handle shooting head style Spey lines with a thin running line but to fit most common Spey lines you would need to consider a larger spool thus a bigger reel to go with it.

Fly Reel Compatibility
I just purchased a Sage DS2 8wt and am now looking for a reel. I am leaning towards the Lamson Velocity 3.5
Now after surfing the board I seem to be very interested in looking into a Spey rod.
My question is if I bought the Velocity 3.5 would it work on a Spey rod with the same wt? Or is there a different system for matching Spey rods to reels.
