Off season fly tying

Want to spend some productive time at the vise this winter?

Inventory all your flies. Select the flies that caught you the most/biggest fish. Separate these patterns from the rest. These are the ones that you are most likely to fish with next season. These are your favorites and confidence builders. They should total around six patterns. Very rarely will they ever be more than twelve.

Tie these in larger quantities, various sizes, and your favorite color combinations. Experiment with new colors/combinations for the upcoming season. You'll have plenty of your favorites once the seasons starts. I usually tie enough to get me through the season when I rather have a rod in my hand, than a bobbin.

Save some time near fishing season for new patterns you might have picked up from fly shows, friends, and web sites.
