After his introduction at the Fall City Clave the master rod designer was dying to get out and fish! Sinktip and I were more than willing to be the designated drivers! After an evening of consulting the river levels we decided on a float down the Skykomish.

While we found no steelies, Nobuo managed to swim some nice dollies - one in particular was special!

What follows is a short chronicle in pictures of our day with the CND Master.

The day stared in a very cold fog - we almost lost him!

The night before had been short (Juro and Dana talked until 2:00 Am - I got there at 5:00), the wind was freezing cold, his waders were leaking, obnoxious gear-guys corked him - yet still Nobuo Nodero - Master rod designer and true hard-core fisherman had to be dragged off the river. Alas, his quest for a Washington steelhead would have to wait for another test, but he is definitely one of us - a member of the wacko steelhead fraternity.

I want to thank Duggan for chauffering us so skillfully down the river, this was Nobuo's first driftboat ride - he loved it!

Here Nobou figures he can entice the one the low-holers missed!

Thats very cool that you guys got to fish the Sky, looks like it was a beautiful day and that was one huge dolly for the sky. Its to bad that Nuboa had to get low holed buy the plug pullersbut I am sure you explained that its something that is quite common around here. Great pics.

Guys,

I received email from Nobuo. He's back home and misses the Northwest already.

He does not have jetlag but is suffering from "wildernesslag."

Juro returns tonight to my place from the OP. He's been there wednesday and thursday.

We fished with Mike Kinney tuesday on the Skagit without any steelhead grabs, although I picked up a couple Dollies, one of 4-5 pounds (I used a Bonefish Bunny). I floated the Sky yesterday without a touch, sight or rumor.

See you this weekend,
Leland.

Fred,

Kush or Dana will correct this if wrong but I believe Nobuo was formally the rod designer for Diawa UK. He has since moved on and formed his own company CND Designs. The CND speys have been the talk of every spey get together up this way since November. Simply put, they rock!

There is a full spectrum of actions, lengths and weights. I fished last Sunday with the 15' 10/11 Custom and it was a sweet winter rod. The two rods at the Fall City clave that drew the most oohs and ahs were the 16'7" Thompson Specialist and the 15'6" Salmo Salar Specialist.

Don't know for sure but I would bet at least a few of these will show up at the Sandy Clave.
