Took my annual scouting mission around the Swift yesterday afternoon. As usual the water was low and crystal clear despite flood conditions elsewhere. Took note of some new structure in the FFO section and also some changes below the bridge.

Despite some serious time devoted purely to observation I did not see a single fish, dink or otherwise, anywhere. Even the Y-pool was dead empty. Strange considering the river's ability to hold over fish year to year. I'm wondering if the poachers had their way with it again  I don't know what would stop them considering the typical lack of DFW presence throughout this watershed...

I can't remember where I heard it, but I heard fairly bad reports on poaching between rt 9 & the Y pool last fall. Now about the DFW presence ... and its only going to get worse.

Although I hate to bring it with me, my cellphone will be in my vest this year and I will be ringing in every person and lic. plate I see who is keeping in the C&R section or bait-dunking in front of an FFO sign. THEN I will tell them about it.

I'm tired of confronting people on what's supposed to be a relaxing passtime. Luckily some of the local guides have shown some interest in protecting the resource on a day to day basis.

Where is this river you guys are talking about?

The Swift river Dave is talking about is in central Massachussetts. It is a tailwater that flows out of the Quabbin reservoir with very clear & high quality water year round. It is the closest tailwater trout fishery to Boston. gets heavy fishing pressure and can be a very challenging place to fish.
