Looks like my streak of fly fishing for Gls steelhead will be over at 11 months unless a material change in the cold weather happens this week.

Heres the current weekly forecast for Chicago and south lake michigan. Little better than last 2 days when they were predicting -10 to -20 overnight on Thursday and Friday of the this coming week.

Bait chuckers aren't even touching many putting spawn skeins in their faces.

I guess I will just have to tie flies, read, and listen to Mr. Evans reports from the Rogue with that new Burkeheimer spey, its going to hurt but I am a man and can deal with it.

Guess I will knock out those pike and mucky flies next weekend and send out the hair wing salmon and steelhead fly swap flies.

always could look at it as an opportunity to start a new streak in February

Presently 44 degrees, bright blue sky and warming up here in Ashland. Snigger, Snigger.

Cruel man, for a new Burkie owner you're supposed to look kindly on us lesser mortals.

Dean Mitchell discharge is always open. Pretty decent area to swing a fly also.

It ain't good old river fishing but it works.

Near where I live, there is a coal-fired power plant that discharges (heated) cooling water into a trib feeding the lake. Voila - a warmer water discharge into the lake which attracts runs. Yeah, it's akin to surf fishing, but as soon as we get a warmer break in the weather so I can feel my fingers, and not as scenic, and it is sort of crowded, but it'll have to do until something better comes along!

Bob, is that the Russell power plant ?

Yes I know how about the warm water discharges but when its 10 -20 degrees and a wind chill into the minuses, you cannot last much longer than a half hour with out having to flee to warmth of a car.

Besides the playoffs and Super Bowl are still with us until after next weekend

Maybe I will be tempted after that since it gets real boring here during February.

Lets hope for a February thaw and some rain !!

Fred keep the reports coming.

Greg -

Yup! Just pick a day when the wind is from a southerly direction so the surf is not too high. Fishing there varies from day to day - you just have to "be there" - unfortunately, it can't be forecast.

The crowd at the bridge is pretty thick (mostly lifters and bait slingers), but where the current runs out into the lake, it can be interesting....

Hal - the car is not that far away - there is a convenient state public fishing parking lot right there, so you can run to the car if you need to get warm, then go back out.

BobK

PS - How can it get boring with 2 siberian husky pups in the house?

Hal,

Nobody said it would be easy. Nothing in the world like a north wind blowing in your face to make you appreciate 30d weather and a nice river valley.

when it comes to you guys.

Hal, 10 layers of clothing, one, well maybe two, of those liquid fuel hand warmers. A thmo of hot tea laced with a good brandy and your set to go.

You fellows are describing what I remember, (and glad) and why we left Winnipeg.:D

You can kill them if you hit the warm water discharges on the right day with no wind or at least with it at your back. Go for it, keep the car running so its warm when you jump back in it every 20 minutes or so. Make sure you have a full tank of gas though and crack the windows.

Pups are now running behind me wrestling. Then will pile in the corner and go to sleep laying on top of one another. Oops just took the alarm clock off the table when jumping away from other one.

Yesterday we had our two pups and the breeder brough 3 adults they showed and the two other pups from the litter they are holding for other people. 7 siberians running around the backyard in the snow playing. These dogs are so friendly it really scary.

The adults we saw yesterday have magnificent white, brown and reddish long winter coats. Really some beautiful hair, it going to be hard for me to resist tying some siberian hair wings in two years.

Once you get to the discharge why leave. Dress warm move about a bit and you will be fine. Dean Mitcell is even out of the wind and can be loaded with fish.

I also have the fix for attachment reading issue.

Hal - no WONDER you get cold so fast - in your inventory, you forgot to list the flask of single malt, or Bushmill's, or whatever turns you on!

Well at least you had a streak that could come to an end. I would love to be able to hit the water as much as you. Don't worry you'll be back on the water before you know it.
