Deer Hair Surf Candy

This is a deer hair variation of the surf candy. I have used chartuse over white, but your favorite color combination will catch many fish, too.

Hook: Any good saltwater hook will do. I like to keep them small, though. These are tied on a size #1 Daiichi.
Thread: I like clear mono, but any will do.
Body: White over chartuse deer hair
Flash: Your choice
Topping: Peacock herl
Body: Duco 5 minute epoxy
Eyes: Stick-on prismatic eyes, sliver or pearl.

1. Place the hook in the vice and attach the tying thread.
2. At about mid-shank, tie in the white deer hair, using your thumb and forefinger to push it so the deer hair surrounds the hook shank.
3. Tie in flash. I like to use just a little but you can tie in enough so it serves as a distinct lateral line.
4. Tie in darker colored (chartuse) deer hair.
5. Tie in 4 to 6 strands of Peacock herl.
6. Whip finish and cut the tying thread.
7. Mix up some 5 minute epoxy and using just a little of it, work it into the deer hair from the hook eye all the way to the start of the bend of the hook. Make sure you thoroughly saturate the wing fibers. Just before the epoxy sets up, pull on the long fibers to get the silhouette you want. You can experiment here making the silhouette thin or fat depending on the baitfish you want to imitate.
8. When the first coat of epoxy is completely cured, place the eyes in position. You could also draw in a gill slit with a red Sharpie if so desired.
9. Apply a second coat of epoxy to the fly to finish it.
