I just found out today that the plovers have just about shut down the sand trail between Weekapaug and Quonochotaug. There is now a gate at the parking lot where the sand trail starts. It is closed from dusk to dawn, even the property owners can't use it. To get to the west side of the Quonny beachway you have to walk from the parking lot.
During the day the USFW are having monitors with radios and cell phones. To drive out there during the day if the birds are close to the trail each vehicle will have a walker in front of it to kind of keep the birds out of the way. The ruts are to be filled in so that the chicks won't get stuck in a rut. This is to continue until the birds fly away. This I guess is what happens when people don't obey the rules.Like drive on the beach where it is restricted. I will know more after next friday. Here I was planning to start fishing for Albies in about 2 weeks. Come on birds FLY AWAY! Do you people in Mass have the same problem?

Hi Art -

Yes, we have many miles of prime real estate set aside for the plovers as we speak! I'll have to admit they are vulnerable to ORV traffic on the beach. I could have stepped on the chicks last season when they were fledgings.

Maybe this is a good time to break out the raft to cross over to the west side from the ramp!

Man - albies in two week? Gotta love the Rhody coast!

Hi Art,

Yep same thing up north at PI. Minus the tunoids of course. :(

Went for a Family Outing Saturday to NWR. The Greenies were Very BAD until the Afternoon breeze picked up & then it was Tolerable. Only Lots #1 & #7 are open. By my calculations that 5+ miles of beach shut down!

I have a new internet acronym:
PP-TLC --> Piping Plover -- Tastes Like Chicken!

What lot did you go to on sat. I was at lot 1 with my wife. I was the nut in waders flyfishing. All I could get was one 14" mackeral and I could't find any bait at all.

Larry,

I think you reeled in your line right in front of us! Around 15:00, Green waders, Brown wader boots, Grey stripping basket, right?

I was down there Saturday morning at the state end, beaching it with my family. Greenies were horrific...If you did not have bug spray you left the beach. Lots #1, #6 and #7 were open. I did not expect to do much given it was 10 in the morning, but did manage to pick up a 25" incher and 5 or 6 schoolies off the rocks about an hour into the incoming.......DennisS
