Would a Redington RS2 for a 9/10 line be able to handle a #8 spey line and backing?
Thanks in advance:D

so I'm # 34. Is any answer better than none at all? probably not. I have never held that reel in my hand, and anyway, it would depend on whether you were talking about a full DT8 line, a long belly (XLT or Grande Spey), or a launcher - and of course, the backing. I have heard that Redington reel capacity is overestimated, if that helps

Stew-
Like loco_alto said, it all depends on the belly length of line and backing size. Let me know what exactly you are thinking because I could give you a yes or no answer but I do doubt it because the 8/9 is a fairly small reel.

This is as close as I can come to being helpful, loca_alto. I have a Redington AL 9/10 that I use with a Rio Windcutter 789 multi-tip line. It works just fine, with plenty of backing. I don't know how much, exactly. I wound the entire line on, attached the backing and filled the reel up. Then I walked around my yard while emptying the reel, tied the backing to the reel arbor and filled the reel, backing first.
I use it with my Redington DFR 12'6" 7wt two hander.

My guess would be that the Windcutter #8 and Midspey 7/8 could be used on that reel with enough backing to fish for steelhead. A custom shooting head would be cake.

But if you decided to go to a Spey DTF #8 or any of the extended belly lines like the GrandSpey or XLT, you'd be better off with the 12/13 or even the 13/14.

Which line configuration are you considering?

Stew I don't know if this will help but a buddy of mine has the same reel and he got a used line like you are talking about and he can't get it all on his reel either. If he uses less backing he could do it but do you need all that backing.

Stew,

The RS2 9/10 won't even come close to holding a XLT 8/9.

That's the only line I've tried on it.

I was thinking of the Rio Windcutter for #8 WF. what do you think? Would that work?
