On Wednesday evening, 10/2/02 at 7:00 PM, the NH Fish & Game Marine Division will be hosting New Hampshire's ONLY public hearing for Draft Amendment 6 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass.

This is the only forum NH recreational fishermen will have to express their views of this management proposal. It is extremely important that anglers show up to express their opinion of the Amendment 6 draft.

CCA has created and distributed a "Angler's Guide to Amendment 6" which states our position on the various options offered in Draft Amendment 6. The following is a summary of CCA-NH's position by option:

* CCA-NH supports a more conservative fishing mortality target of either F=0.25 or F=0.20 to allow Striped Bass to live longer and grow larger either Option 1 or 2. The other option, F=0.30, will not allow for that.

* CCA-NH supports establishing both a biomass target and a spawning-stock biomass target Option 2. Currently, the process is managed solely by the allowable mortality rate (F). This option gives the managers other parameters to examine when determining the health of the stock.

* CCA-NH supports setting the season conservatively and leaving it in place for three years - Option 1. We must stress, however, that this option is viable only if a more conservative mortality rate (F) is adopted.

* CCA-NH does NOT support reallocation of the fishery stocks at this time. This is a very contentious issue that should be carefully studied before being adopted.

* CCA-NH supports Option 1 relative to the EEZ that EEZ zones remain closed to fishing. Opening the EEZ will inevitably lead to increased and unplanned-for mortality. It will also adversely impact several states that have adopted gamefish status for Striped Bass.

* CCA-NH supports a penalty for those states adopting length/bag limits of a conservation equivalency to those adopted by ASMFC

CCA's "Angler's Guide to Amendment 6" is a clear, concise, easy to understand summary of Draft Amendment 6 and what the draft means to us as recreational anglers. It can be found at CCA's national website at www.joincca.org

the Public Information Document for Amendment Six is available from ASMFC and may be downloaded from the commission's website at www.asmfc.org

What we are looking for is anglers to voice their support of the CCA Position on Amendment 6 as outlined in the "Anglers Guide to Amendment 6" and summarized above. Numbers speak volumes so a large turnout is essential.

NH F&G's Marine Division office is at 225 Main Street, Durham, NH. The date and time again is 10/2/02 at 7:00 PM.

Thank you all and we hope to see you at the public hearing.

Eric Roach
CCA-NH State Secretary

Thanks for the reminder Eric. I'm planning on heading down tonight, anyone else going to be there?

With the recently submitted petition to open a commercial striper season in NH, it is even more important that we get as many rec anglers as possible there.
