Well, I finally have a familiarity with Chatham. Thanks to John, I got a tour of some nice fishing spots. We met early Monday morning at the light and worked our way around to some bowls on the ocean side of South Beach. Not too much going on...bird action, bait, seals....after three hours, we each finally got a striper, and then I promptly hooked into a fish that showed me my backing, headed downtide, and broke off....probably a blue.

My wife and I joined John on Tuesday for the Rip Ryder shuttle over to North Monomoy. If you'd like a synopsis of the fishing, see Big Dave's post. I ditto his sentiments about the tough conditions.

This morning (7/24) I took my father in law to the light to try and get him hooked up on South Beach. Met John in the parking lot, who had other family obligations....we said our goodbyes and walked to the ocean side....seals and mung everywhere....I didn't even bother wetting a line, but after showing my father in law how to cast his jig (he's GREEN to fishing, folks), he hooked up to a monster blue. It was on for about half a minute and promptly broke off. The look on his face was priceless, and I think that I may have a new fishing buddy. :) I'm even more impressed that he managed to hook up in all of that mung. Hey, mung is a four letter word, isn't it? :p

Ironically, my best fishing this vacation was last Thursday at the West Wall in RI. I took my time going up to Falmouth to meet my wife who was finishing a conference up there. There were hickory shad all over the jetty, but mostly just outside of the first breakers. They gave me about two solid hours of consistent action, and when I needed to move on to Falmouth, some large blues were beginning to boil.

John, thanks for taking the time to show me around. Your local knowledge was invaluable, and even though the fishing was slow I enjoyed the down time theorizing about the season's ups and downs, fly patterns, ecology, and the like. My wife is also thankful for the tour of the island. I'm looking forward to the fall to see if I can make it up for the migration. Things are sticky with weddings and other commitments, but I'll see what I can do. Is it rude to be a no-show at a wedding?

Oh, and one more thing.....the next time I go to Chatham, I won't bother fishing on the way up. I'll save that good mojo for a couple of cows. ;)
