I had some guests in town over the weekend who wanted to do some fishing during their stay. I took them over to the Conservation Area in Essex at high tide on Saturday afternoon.

Although this is an excellent early season location, I have never caught a fish on the fly there after the end of June. But my guests were spin fisherman, so I thought that they had a shot at hooking up and I figured I could get some casting practice in so I brought my 8wt along.

Well we all consistently caught fish for the hour before and after the tide had crested. I pulled in a handful of fish on the fly using a clouser that I tied entirely with Sea Foam Super Hair and a little flash (largest was 24 in), while each of my guests caught at least one keeper.

It just goes to show......once you think you have things figured out..........

That's such a fishy area, I'll have to hit it this year. I've fished all around it from Annisquam to Wingaersheek to Cranes to Plum Island sound, but never the Essex itself. Of course I have hit Woodmans several times!
