: Scout trip success!

Reporting from the Chatham Anglers Club HQ...

Bombed down the cape straight from work to fulfill my duty ;-) to scout for the clave. Worked against the clock down to a favorite inlet just as the outgoing tide turned and the blaze orange sun lit the western sky. The water felt a little cold, and things appeared quiet. I continued onward and just a hint of doubt came over me as can happen on the second outing of the year.

Suddenly, a familiar boil formed in the flat where the current didn't know whether to flow in or out, then another, and another. A giddy feeling came over me as bass started to boil all around me and I cast my small squid pattern into the fray. Strip. Strip-strip - WHAM! Retrieving just under the surface, a bright and feisty 22" fish slammed it and proceeded to impress me for such a small fish. As it came in I noticed another following it, and the next cast resulted in another fish. The action was hot and heavy until dark.

Nothing big in the mix but it was good to get the "all you want" spring opener under the belt. After a winter like that it's easy to appreciate when the spring arrivals finally show up. One or more sessions like this and it'll be time to focus on the submarines like the ones we had eat our flies consistently last year - but this early in the game schoolies a great rite of spring that I appreciate and enjoy.

We should be doin' good by next weekend!
