: The Kid hooks up
My daughter hooked her first striper on a fly rod the other night. A twinkie but very cool for both of us. The next one she hooked had a bit more to it. She had the rod pointing straight ahead, I'm telling her hold the rod up, pull, pull. She says "I can't" The fish got away but what a blast it was seeing her hook up.
The most interesting part of the evening for me was prior to the action starting it was dead as a doornail. We're fishing for about a half hour and I'm thinking it may not happen tonight. The area is usually consistenly good for schoolies at night toward the end of the outgoing. The river is only about 50yds across and we are fishing the structure, covering most of the water. All of a sudden I see what looks like a boat wake without the boat, it's as if the boat is invisible and this big V of water is flying down the river. At first I thought it was a seal, it was not. The fish had arrived and the place lit up. Splash, crash, pop... Nothing huge but plenty of 'em. I'd never seen a school pushing water like that before.
It was a good night.
Aweome! I envy the both of you, what a great memory!!
My 6 year old daughter is on me to get her into a striper on the fly, i think she needs to wait another year or so.

Excellent, Jim! It won't be long before she'll be wanting to get one on a fly that she tied herself, like at MSBA. :)
Roop, what about you hooking and handing off to her? barbless for twinkies?
JimW - I see that my mind & fingers weren't connecting. I meant to ask how old your daughter is. I remember you telling me about her cleanig up in the hiddie trout tourneys & was wondering her age now + when she started using the fly rod.
DFix - what's up with your email?? Good suggestion, last time I did that with a smallmouth & my 4 weight I learned it's best to tie a lanyard to the rod!

Congrats Jim, I hope there are many more to come. It must be the time of year, but last night my 6 year old asked "daddy when can we go fly fishing". Just what I wanted to hear :) .
As a two-time veteran of the casting claves, she was bound to hit paydirt! Great news, and please congratulate her for me!

Fantastic. What a great memory you now have. I love it!
Roop...My oldest turns 6 next month. I started her out last year using a spin rod for snappers. She loved it. This year, snappers on a fly rod. :)
Do you guys who have kids also have kid-friendly cameras to take pics of all these Kodak moments??? It'd be a hoot to run a thread of just kid-related catches.
Roop - the lanyard crossed my mind, but I figured it was an understood, so it wasn't included in the thought. As for the email, I have no idea. Everyone else sends and connects.

Way to go Jim, did she use one of those big herring flies like you gave me ?(he he!) You gotta get a picture of her with a fish. My youngest has his Ray's fly that he tied on the shelf in the kitchen just waitin for me to take him to catch his first ever stripper, Looks like it's about that time ! I'll let you know how we make out. BTW have you been going to TNFF at Baymens ? I gotta start that up again as well, hope to see you soon. I;ll let you know when I'm heading that way.
Tell your daughter CONGRATULATIONS for me.
Congrats on the guiding trip! Seems to be a success. I'll be heading down to TNFF, if anyone else is gonna be there, I'll see ya there!
You know I forgot the camera and the funny thing is I was driving by Wal-Mart and didn't pick one up, bad vibes about being to optimistic I guess. Wish I had picked it up now, but there will be more opportunities for pics.
She just turned 9. I still haven't finished that 7wt and she was having a tough time with the 9wt. You only need to cast ~20' at this spot. I started her on sunnies and snappers last year. She actually got first place in the 9-11 age group this year too, I did not let her fly fish for safety reasons (very high winds that day). A 17.5 ounce rainbow took it, just an ounce shy of the overall best trout. I'm hoping some of her skills will rub off on me. Maybe you should put a lanyard on the little ones, I've seen the size of the fish you catch, they may get pulled in. ;)
The instruction she got at those casting claves is invaluable.
I let her fly one of those flies as a kite last weekend. I cannot make TNFF this week or next but I'm shooting for the 30th. I actually made it to Dave's shop around 10ish last week. Rich and I were just getting started for the evening, sounds like they did OK.
I hear there may be a competition with the bait chuckers this week, we're counting on you.
