I ran into an ad for these reels... but never heard about them or where they are made.. it seems some are pricy while others are not... Just looking to see if anybody can elaborate on these?

Striblue,

Heard of them but don't know anything about them. Been looking around for a new reel myself. What I don't understand is there are so many reel manufacturers to choose from unlike 20-30 years ago. There was Plueger, Garcia, Orvis, Cortland, South Bend, Martin. Now there must be 50-100 manufacturers. I cannot understand how they are making money, since they cannot sell that many each year.

Anybody ever have an automatic fly reel ? I had two when a youngster. Boy we thought they were cool. I wonder if they are worth anything now as collectors item. No I don't have them anymore, my younger brother might. He cleaned out our fishing and hunting stuff from the NJ house we grew up in when my parents retired.

I was a 1000 miles away here in Chicago.

Stenzel reels are made in Germany.

Check out this link from France listing all fly reel manufacturers in the world: http://flyreelmania.free.fr/.

URLs provided for those with web presence. Far more than 50.

I have also found it very hard to believe any reel manufactures can make any money as the market seems overely saturated.

I've been in the industry for over 5 years now and in that time I've seen many reels come and go (and some which never gained enough of a following to really "come (along)").

In those years, I've realized that if you stick with Ross, Lamson, Abel, Tibor, Bauer, Loop and Hardy you will not go wrong!

Well. I agree that there are so many.... Since I had to cancel our family trip to the Bahamas at school vacation in February... my wife "gave" me permission to take my share of the vacation money and get what I wanted... so I went ovrboard... I would not have been able to get this Abel reel had we gone to the Bahamas.

John...
That thing looks like it's full of holes!...like the milling machine operator went NUTZO!...and then there's the "botched paint job"!
Was this some sort of "factory second" deep-discounted-on- account-there-was-so-many-screw-ups in the production?!
...Musta' been really cheap?!

A matching hat/acsot/shirt could give you quite the Timothy Leery head rush!

Striblue et al -

A great fishing equipment portal site I refer to often is:
http://www.acc.umu.se/~widmark/lwmanufa.html

Clearly the work of a first-order gear head, whoever is managing the site is updating it regularly. You'll find a Stenzel link (and pretty much every other maker as well). Happy browsing.

Wish my High School German included a chapter on flyfishing...because then maybe I would be able to understand something on their website. :)

John Scissorshands...
I called Abel and demanded to talk to the "big cheese"...
They handed me off to some Gary Abel who seemed pleasant enough and indicaed that he was way up on the pecking order...
I took the liberty to tell him my name was "John Morrin" and how I wanted satisfaction because the "customer is always right"...
I told him about the "holes" and the "paint job" and the custom embroidery name tag...among other things...
I really vented and felt good to get it all off my (your) chest...

He said that he would start a drug testing program for the milling machine operator and paint QC folks...That's a start, anyway...
If you send the reel directly back to Gary, he said he'll take care of it. (You might want to include a note of apology for the references I (you) made referring to his ancestral lineage...)
Thanks John, I needed that! It's good to vent, even vicariously using someone else's name...
Good luck with future Abel transactions!
