: 2002 Casting Clave Thread

02-13-2002, 11:18 PM
Just thought I'd post a thread to start the dialog on this upcoming event (March 09).

I suggest minimum occupancy 30 people, maximum 40. $20 per head with wives and children free. In other words we need to get 30 people to sign up to hold the event. We will stop the signups at 40.

The event is held at the Reading Athletic Center, a huge facility only minutes from the Wilmington Shriner's Auditorium where the Fly Show will be happening. The hours are 3pm to 7pm, so those going to the show will have several hours there before the short drive to the RAC.

Contests and casting instruction will be provided. Thanks to Mark Doogue, the parent/child casting contest winner will go home with a pair of Bruins tickets (applause to Mark).

Tom Dunlap will be accompanied by the Powell Rod rep, so make sure you try out all the rods they will bring.

Several Spey rods will be rigged and ready for those who are curious about them.

Tables will be set up alongside so if you need to catch up on a few flies for a swap feel free.

A beginner's class will be held like last year, so if you want to expose a child or spouse to a first view of fly casting this is a great place to do it.

Please post a list of rods you plan to bring along so people can have an idea what they might want to test while at the clave.

Psyched to see everyone there!

...This is beginning to look like some sort of celebration...I like it!...

...If there is still room for a slightly handicapped, moderately decorated, freshly RETIRED war veteran...I'll be there! With a few custom rods from the Great NorthWest (if they get here in time...)

02-14-2002, 09:41 PM
Checking in also.. I will be there with a bunch of rods and can show newbees knot tying.

02-15-2002, 11:53 AM
Another re-enlistee. Bringing a pair of T&T Horizons, 8- and 10-weights, and looking forward to a lesson from Striblue on fast, easy Bimini Twists without knees, toes, or third hands. ;)

02-15-2002, 12:29 PM
Having a tough time posting lately, don't know why ! But I'll be there, with the wife and two kids. All of which want to try some casting for the first time, ('cept me) I just need the practice, some pointers, and about 30 different rods to really screw me up. Oh well, Looking forward to it !
See you there

Hi everyone, new member here. Just tell me where to send the money and I'm in. I'll be bringing my Diamondback 9wt. and a Temple Fork 6wt. for anyone who wants to try this lower priced line. If you are an aspiring casting instructor, I make a great student. I'll be the guy with the tailing loops ( among other things).

02-15-2002, 02:22 PM
Very sorry I did not complete the payment link yet - tonight I SWEAR

Jared (prez of United Fly Tyers) who is an FFF member has obtained a 'rack' of flyrod/reel outfits that we can borrow for instruction purposes. THANKS JARED & FFF! We'll do our best to do the FFF proud by passing the torch to as many people as we can.

02-15-2002, 04:46 PM
I'm in and will bring a DS2 10wt, a very old browning 7wt, and a Cabela's FT 4wt.

How will indoor spey casting work? I thought you needed a current to spey cast.

02-26-2002, 11:33 AM
And why is it not as convenient to post a check - some (I) must prefer to do so...

In any event, I wish to sign up as opposed to just indicating my intent to attend.

02-26-2002, 10:41 PM
How we looking on sign-ups?

02-28-2002, 10:35 PM
OK - time to get serious! We need a few more people to hit quota.

If paypal is a problem, email me to reserve a spot and get that check to:

Flyfishing Forum
PO Box 58
Groton MA 01450

We need to make an advance payment to get the hall. The casting event is next weekend.

See you there!

03-02-2002, 07:58 AM
Glad it worked for ya Fishhawk! Bring that nice 9weight again.

Dave Williams has suggested a great place to get together afterwards that can accomodate very large groups and has great food at great prices. Sounds like a no-brianer to me!

Dave, can you provide info? thanks!

New member and a total beginner. I paid by Paypal and I will be there.

03-04-2002, 07:51 AM
I am in for the casting clave. Will bring one son.

Through a comedy of errors on my part, I cannot use PayPal right now (my email addresses are changing, I tried to reset my password, PayPal is mailing me my new password via regular mail.). My goof - PayPal has worked fine for me in the past.

Anyway, here's my plan: If I get PayPal access before the weekend I will use it. If not, I'll pay at the door. If you want me to handle it differently, or if you're already overbooked, let me know.

Thanks - should be great to see everyone!

No, apparently she's been kidnapped and spirited away to some terribly dangerous foreign locus and threatened with her life - I don't know if she'll be rescued by then. Her handler, secret codename Hightech, will know her whereabouts; however, he will disavow any and all knowledge of the kidnapper or his/her whereabouts until the next episode of "Where in the World Is - Lolita" :smokin:

03-04-2002, 06:05 PM
Au Contraire, Mon Ami....She HAS been abducted, but I'm afraid that a someone from THIS board is the culprit! :tsk_tsk:

Seems this person wants to see her at an upcoming gathering, BEFORE she heads down to the tropics. Pictures to follow.

03-04-2002, 09:15 PM
I'll be there. Paypal's away.

I'll try to remember to bring my:

9' 8wt T&T
10.5' 8wt Kenny Abrames
8.5' 6wt Lamiglass fiberglass
7.5' 4wt of indeterminate pedigree.

I stopped in to the Orvis store in Boston today.

After explaining to the store manager that I would like a demo T3 for a gathering of 40 potential "gear" heads to false cast with, he agreed to lend me one.

In all seriousness, he broke his store policy to offer me one so that we could all try it for ourselves. He hadn't heard about the Forum yet, but, he went the extra mile to accomodate me for our benefit.

I'll have my Ross Canyon #5 loaded with both a full sink line and an intermediate if you want to try the T3 out.

I'll be there. Sent my $20.00 to the P.O. Box. I'll
bring my Looomis GLX 10" 10WT and Sage 9" 10WT
Both With Abel reels and Shooting Heads.

Well, one of my beginners had to bow out of the casting clave.

I still have one, my friend Greg, that would love to be involved with the beginners class.

As for the vacancy left behind by my other friend, it's paid for so if someone is on the fence or on a strict budget they are welcome to the spot.

Dad will definetely be there, though.
