Good long deer hair can be hard to find. It often gets a curve or too curly/hollow by the time you find it long enough.

It's hit or miss, especially if you are looking for a specific dye color.

I would recommend calling around to our sponsors, I'm sure they will put aside a package if you describe what you are looking for.

Maybe try some elkhair? It's more hollow but I've had good luck finding straight long patches.

I was speaking with Dick at Fly Rod&Reel just yesterday about this. Yes, it's universally hard to find long deer belly hair even in natural colors. He's getting some material in next week that he wants to experiment with as a solution to this issue. Give him a call next week to see what he thinks ( I'm stalling because I have a brain lock on the name of the critter it's from, maybe elk? )

Just checked one of my catalogue sources.

Janns Netcraft offers
"Select Deer Body Hair; Long/fine 1" - 2 1/4"" as their catalogue # 615-404 Does not indicate what colors ( if any ) it's available in. 800-638-2723 or

I'll send you some "long" stuff, about 2 to 2 1/4 inch long, as long as you don't bi#@& about bambies getting it.... or else I'll get John to kill you...
It is all "natural" colour, but you can bleach it and then dye it to any color you want or have it done at some taxidermist or other place that dyes fur.

Jeff.. actually John Morrison at the fly show.. the guy who showed me how to spin some mean dear hair pointed me out to one of the booths where I think, I bought long deer hair... I will look in my supply to find the name of the shop.. I just can't remember it off hand.

Blue Ribbon Flies out of Boseman Montana has some of the finest long bucktail of anyone. Hunter's also has great long
bucktails. American Angler out of Salem NH also has good long bucktail. I got a wonderful olive bucktail from them.
The one color that I am looking for is yellow . Seems when they dye the tails they have a tendency to shrink.

I've gotten some great long tails from American. I did great at KTP one day, standing there and picking thru the packages of colors I wanted. IMO it's a responsibility to look through all the tails available - some are blatantly long and easy to identify; in some colors like black or olive, it's not so easy and you should fumble through them to find the fiber length, just like trying to find the right hackle length in a cape or a saddle. Thanks all.

I'm planning a trip to the Den tomorrow AM, look forward to the care package from Frenchcreek (wait till you see the surprise I have for your visit this year!!) and appreciate the other suggestions. Elk hair is a strong possibility..

I know this is obvious to those of us who have already made this mistake... but,
When looking for deer 'hair' for spinning, it is deer body hair and not bucktail that you are using. The body hair has a naturally hollow structure that creates that dramatic 'flair' when you cinch it down tight. Bucktail fibres are thinner and more solid, not as suited for spinning.

From one for whom any hair at all is a mystery........

Be aware !
Elk body hair is dreamtically different from Deer body hair...
look at both very carefully and make sure you know the properties of each before spending any kind of coin...
