:) Hi I am looking for egg patterns for use on pacific salmon. Just starting out in fly tying again after 20 year absence. Bought some glow yarn but not sure how to tie it in and can't find it in any of my 4 books. Can anyone help me with the tie in and patterns?

The URL below has two standard egg patterns and tying instructions that should work for salmon, they do here in the great lakes. Put egg flies into your search engine, and you will find more web site hits with different types.

I do not fish the round glow bug yarn eggs to much, more just a simple frayed yarn fly, yarn fluffed out around different colored hook shanks. You will have to work on getting the yarn to fluff out around the hook.

Beleive it does get tangled in the fishs teeth and it is harder for them to throw the hook, thats why I prefer the fluffed out yarn flies versus the round eggs.

Good luck, it will take a little practice but these are not difficult once you get it down.

Forgot if your fishing for kings, need to tie these on large strong hooks, not the ones specified in that URL, they are for trout and steelhead which would be smaller sizes. Size 4 and up for salmon and size 6 and below for trout and salmon.

For kings you really need a strong egg style hook. Check with your local fly shops or just shoot them an e-mail for what they recommend up there in Alaska.

The easiest and most life like egg patterns are those ones created from glue sticks. They mini glue guns are avaliable at most flyshops as well as the glue sticks come in many differnt colors...some are are opaque and some are transperent. These transperent ones create the most life like egg patterns you will ever create! :)

Hi fmcrae---- Correct to use the 3x short 2x strong Egg Hook [BEAKE] Cut a minnimum of 2 1 1/2" To 4 1 1/2" strips of Good quality Bug yarn. Tie down to the hook shank with Kelvar thread and really crank it up, making sure the yarn dose not leave the top of the shank, lock the yarn in position with a few wraps in front and the finish off. You can intermix colours or add half a hank of material into the 2to 4 pieces tied originally. for a spot of colour Pull straight up with lots of pressure and cut across at the Diameter you would like for your egg. A little triming after and you have a good looking fly.

Good Tying saltRon
