: Sex Life of a Sandeel

12-04-2001, 06:56 PM
In the chapter on forage in Mitchells new book he mentions that the success of the spawn and subsequent abundance of sandeels inshore is somewhat dictated by off-shore water temps. in December. I don't recall what the dependency is, whether warmer or cooler is better.

The weather this year seems to be somewhat like last and the sandeels on the bayside were certainly abundant, as were our striped friends, in May and June of last year. Anybody out there got thier finger on the pulse of this subject, off-shore temps last year at this time and this year? I know from May through the middle of June of 2000 the same bayside location was devoid of bait and bass, at least when I was there.

After the spawn they enjoy a smoke (Cubano) and some good Scotch...And I prefer "fresh dead" with some Chinese mustard.

Fred...I've got a basic spin outfit for you free (not counting patio burger)

The impact of the million ton commercial fishery in the North Sea is devastating to a multitude of species. Just goes to show how important of a role they play in the bigger scheme of things...

I knew this would flush you out,Pete... I knew those eels you brought to CAC stole my cigars... And to think, you were ready to take the blame just so I wouldn't throw those "snakes" out.

12-04-2001, 10:01 PM
"you think that's a cigar yer smokin?" I thought I smelled burning sand eel.

There I wuz...Flight Level 350...2AM...400 miles south of Greenland...on my way to Germany with passengers and cargo
when I spotted a rather substantial town...Atlantis?...NOT!
It was half a dozen factory mother ships and several HUNDRED smaller vessels doing what they do best until it's all gone!
Eye opening and a bit scarey since we're in the food chain somewhere.

John...I get the "knife" in about 6 hours to finish off my Alaska adventure damage...If I don't "make it", you, the roopmeister, and the ninja have first dibbs on some swell toys before the fire-sale/raffle...Juro, yak's in the garage! The pitbull is friendly if you feed him (most of the time)!

I wish you and your shoulder the best during your meeting with the Knife Man.

Hope to see you soon,

Our thoughts are with you dude. It seems to work for the atheletes, I'll bet it will be a liberating improvement for you. I know folks who say "don't know why I waited so long". Hope to see that stealthy solo yak dude out in the canyon hole next season. Hope there is a canyon hole next season. If not we'll find another, and another...

Probably to late, but good luck with the butch....er, surgeon.

Thinking back, we had a sustained cold spell the second half of December last year. A couple of days after Christmas the only open water on Kelly's bay and Follins Pond (Bass River) was where the current runs hard. I don't remember seeing those two bodies frozen like that in the thirty years I've been going down there, though I don't get down that much during the winter.

Pete - you're already at the hospital as this is written. You'll do fine and the shoulder will be great when done. Don't be giving any of the Vulture Squad any free rein with your toys !

Good luck, Bud.

12-05-2001, 09:19 AM
Besides, Pete's pit bull doesn't like me.

12-05-2001, 09:43 AM
Good luck pal... hope all goes well....But... "what's in it for me".

12-05-2001, 12:55 PM

"the sex life of a sandeel", we gotta get you away from that pogy oil. Did striblue get you hooked on that stuff again ?

This was a radical departure from the usual shoulder gig...seems horsing around those 300# semi-rolling frozen fire extinguishers on ice caused some damage to the abdominal cavity way down south...(go figure)
I made a new friend...I think his name was Bubba...a big burley guy real handy with a razor...involved with some state sponsored work release program outa' Concord(?)...he's now quite intimately familiar with a heretofore previously very private/personal region where no man has gone before...
The anesthesiologist (sp?) noted, I was apparently demonstrating manifestations of apprehension...he offered something to "calm the nerves"...(some swell poggie oil!)
My last conscious act had to do with propositioning Nurse Ratchette and inquiring as to the current sanitary status of all the shiny gadgets...
The next thing I know, there's a big face inches from my own and a strange voice attempting to talk me in off the ledge and/or back to reality.

Thanks for all the kind words! (you too John...) Sorry... the yard sale is cancelled until further notice!...and you are stuck with me for an unspecified duration to be determined by Higher Headquarters.
...and NO...you can't see my new zipper!

12-05-2001, 05:58 PM
So Pete, what about the sandeels? Just kidding. Glad to see you came through it with your sense of humor in tack.

12-05-2001, 07:36 PM

Thanks for taking my call and letting the police know it was all a misunderstanding.

I could have sworn when you called last night you said, "take ALL my fly fishing gear REGARDLESS of the outcome."

Sorry about the broken glass down at Area 61, I didn't know how else to get in.

Glad you're OK, really I am.

12-05-2001, 07:55 PM

Tell me it wasn't performed by Dr. Dick Sharp(no pun intended)?

I'm glad to hear all is well. Get well soon.

...$ubstantial reward for information leading to the apprehension and arrest of the individual(s) who thoughtlessly ran over my crotch while I slept on 5 Dec 01. Tread marks indicate GoodYear ATV mud and snow on a heavy SUV or TRUCK...
Thank you for you time and attention!

12-06-2001, 10:24 AM
law enforcement officials will be standing by later this evening to recover some of the stolen items. Reward money may be forwarded or held until Spring Clave

now that reconstructive action has been completed, the question: will it work any better than it did before??? or should we come up with ideas for a new "handle" for you??? (get it - handle??? - Solo might be too appropriate at that point!)   ;)

Glad to hear you're on the mend -
