Did anyone manage to catch the blues festival at Weekapaug this afternoon? Awesome. More birds, bait and fish than I've seen yet this year. I will post photos if they come out ok.

Way to scout the area. Hope you got into them good.

Here's the story, with photos!

I arrived at Weekapaug Breachway at about 11:00 a.m. and spent a couple hours casting at a school of bait in the corner of the west jetty and the beach. There were some bigger fish cruising around keeping the bait herded in the corner but I couldn't get their attention. I could see them attacking the bait but they weren't breaking the surface at all. I don't think anybody else realized they were there. Meanwhile, there was some sporadic bird activity in the area and a few people got some blues off the ends of the jetties but then they seemed to move out. There was enough action to hold my interest.

After my 300th cast or so I looked up and saw some birds working the beach a couple hundred yards to the west of the breachway:

They started to get closer:

They got within casting range:

They got even closer:

They got really close. Notice the clouds of bait:

They moved right up against the jetty:

Did I mention that they got really close?

I even managed to get a few casts into them ;D I had many hookups, landed several (all about 4 to 6#) and got bit off many more times. They were hitting anything people threw at them and there were multiple followers on every hookup, probably munching the bait that the hooked fish were spitting up. I was using a 20# fluoro leader and considered adding some wire, but figured I would still get bit off and then lose the leaders too. It looked like there were at least 2 or 3 types of bait in the mix: some very small slender bait about an inch long or less, some 2 inch bait that I couldn't ID (they weren't deep-bodied enough to be pogies) and some 2 - 3" pogies. I love October in Rhody!

Great report. Glad to hear the shore bound anglers are finally getting their due!

Now hush up!! No one supposed to know about Lil Rhody's gold rush. ;)

Great report Quentin... talk about timely too :)

Quentin, As a journalist, I applaud your steadiness under fire. The pictures are remarkable, but more remarkable is how on earth you managed to control yourself and keep shooting when the call to fish must have been strong.

Thanks guys -- glad you enjoyed it!

Steve - the only time it was hard for me to put down the rod and pick up the camera was when the blitz first started to get close. The fish stayed right in the corner of the jetty for a long time, so I had a chance to catch a few and then get some more photos. By that time, there were lots of other people tossing lures at the fish and their lines were criss-crossing in front of me which made it difficult to fish anyway.

Here's an interesting note that I didn't mention before: most of the anglers were using spinning tackle and catching blues at will, primarily using large plugs and metal. (For the record, I was tossing my favorite flexible non-fibrous synthetic slender baitfish imitation ;) ) After the fish dispersed a little, a couple of flyfishermen showed up and came out to the jetty because the waves prevented them from wading out far enough to reach the action. One of them immediately caught a striper instead of a blue! There must have been some bass under the blues, or perhaps they moved in behind the blues to clean up the leftovers.

MAN! I gotta stop staring at those pictures }>

That big white building is the beach club my family belongs to and one that I worked at through high school. I've fished that jetty many times, when the tide and wind are right, that scenario seems to always pop up. Great pics of the beach there. I think its one of the best beaches around as far as swimming and fishing. Clean white sand for swimming, and lots of bass swimming around your feet while your there. Nice work.
