: 5/9 PI AM Report

Another night of no sleep because of back pain I said screw it and made the 4:30 AM run to PI. After
navigated the Newbury barrel gaunlet I parked at 5:30. Fished the river from the party boats down to
the mouth nobody was hooking up.

One guy was chucking bait next to the jetty on the riverside so I walked over to the beach. Blind
casting away it hit me what I missed most during that awfully long winter. The moon setting at my
back with the sun trying to break over the horizon but being held at bay by light cloud cover. My
lungs filled with salt air and no noise other than the surf breaking at my feet.

After a few dozen fruitless casts I spotted a fish roll on the surface. My cast was dead nuts on the
money and I now had on my first official fish of 2001. A little game of tug of war and I was looking at
bright shiny silver fish cutting hard along the top of a breaking wave that was estimated in the low
30's. Next thing I heard was singing drag followed by a limp line.

Another bump then fish two was on. As I brought this fish in I noticed I wasn't alone at all. A seal
broke the surface just behind the fish I was playing. This one I landed 22" solidly and built like a
football. After a little admiration of it's beauty I walked a short distance to release him hopefully
giving him a shot at avoiding being a seals breakfast. Anyway great to be back on the water.
