: Spring Run Update
02-28-2000, 02:30 PM
We need to round up the all the info so far for this gathering in the midcape. Please update or suggest improvements for any items.
*MODE: We have a sort of clave here where we possibly lodge everyone between a few properties in the midcape area. It dawned on me that given this CLave is not advertised on larger Web Boards (ie.RT), it will probably not grow too far beyond the current size. If it does grow more, we can then go to another level. There are a couple of good meeting places like the parking lot at W. Dennis Beach Jetty if we need. Personally I like the idea of exploring new ways to Clave in addition to the large highly organized type. Those are great too but who says we can't do a smaller Clave in a looser fashion?
*Date: I selected May 6,7 as the weekend. For 2 reasons, first the following weekend is Mothers day and secondly the one after that is my daughters dance recital, doohhh. We could go the weekend before, but I figure less chance of getting bigger fish. (??)
*Lodging: I offered to sleep 6 at my familys cottage and then Juro and Roop said they may have some space for 1 or 2 at other locales. Need to confirm that.
My guests signed up so far are: Juro, Sully (tentative),BobD, JohnM, Grego, and Jay C.
So in overflow are: Al D., and Roop. If Juro gets a place that opens a bed at my house.
*Location: Location of my cottage is on Bass River which is S. Dennis, midcape. There is a free boat ramp a short drive away and boats can be anchored in front of my place.
*Fishing: There will be schoolies right in our area up to 20". We can do the whole river, find some holes and rips. Mouth of river and jetty/beach is 15 mins. at no wake speed. It's also about 20 mins to Barnstable Harbor by car but maybe we should stay on the South side (anyone? ) We can go anywhere since we will be midcape. We can try some creek mouths (ahem..Juro)where there may be some herring runs. Anything within an hour drive or so get's the whole Cape. The canal is 27 mins away too.
It's a little over 2 months from now so things may change.
I will beat the drum. Please make suggestions.
Sounds good Terry!
Your decision on whether to make it a full regional event or keep it moderately sized. It'll be fun either way.
South side should be producing, if herring are in the fish will be on both sides. If we have enough boats we should include a bayside run to the big bass honeyholes. It's only 6-8 miles across the cape on rte 134 from where our cottage is to Sesuit as I recall. There are some surprising fisheries beyond the tideline in freshwater on the sound side that time of year worth trying too.
I'd recommend tying some very large herring flies along with the traditional fare.
This schedule leaves the bronzeback clave wide open too.

Any chance I could join in on the May gathering? Ideally, I'd shoot down from Boston for the day (weather & family permitting) but if necessary a good friend's dad is in Dennis so I can probably wrangle a spot to stay.

Sure come join us. I mentioned before that I'd like to try to not make my family cottage the grand meeting zone for a big Clave. Already we will have as many as 6 or 7 vehicles, 1/2 with trailors. Thats as far as I want to push it.
So we will have (as in other Claves) meeting places and times for the greater group.

I am excited about a mini-clave, as the board grows and is 'discovered' the small community feeling will slip away but offshoots like a small clave have to be relished in the meantime.
My question to you is what can we (I) do to help you organize the logistics? E-mail me with thoughts if you want.
A meeting this month would not be a bad idea to lay out a plan and get some organization established.
With the weather warming up it is hard not to start getting distracted.

Exactly Jay. This is a unique time. Small crew. With the possibility of 3 houses, and some day trippers we could see a number around 10 to 15. That's not really much smaller than some claves. It's not- too small to interest some of the bigger guns here, yet it's small enough to be easy to run. I do think it belongs to the FFForum though since it is launched from this springboard.
For now what I was planning on was:
1. Make a email mailing list for the 6 guys who crash at my cottage. This is for directions and odds and ends, bring sheets, food etc.
2. Have an open discussion here on where to meet up each day with the rest of crew. This usually entails Parking lot X at first light. This will mean Sat.am and Sun. am
The Cape is vast and we will be in the middle. We could go many places. There is plenty of knowledge to tap into on this board. We need to narrow it down to a few places and have some check in times to share info.
3. Plan a dinner gathering sometime during the weekend.
4. Juro, can we or should we move this traffic to some quieter section of the board?
ps. Can't wait to cast my new 9 wt. rod, reel ,and line into the salt!

Not to pat backs, until some of us (Al, Greg, the Esteys, etc) stoked the fire, that would be much bigger than the average clave. AND WE CAUGHT FISH http://184.108.40.206/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif

Like all claves it belongs to it's attendees.

I assume you already have those 6 people?

I liked the way that worked at Rhody!

If it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me. I do think we should put it under SWFF / stripers though. Admin will take care of that.

See top of this thread under *Lodging
Great idea. We're 2 miles from there.

"IF YOU POST IT THEY WILL COME!"
Claves take on lives of their own. However, frequent postings tend to increase interest, but with the current state of cabin/spring fever I don't think interest will be a problem. I think this year we should try to have a couple of differnt "flavors" of claves.
(1) Full Blown. Multi-day, well organized & coordinated (food, lodging, boats, etc.).
(2) Mini. Same a regular, but with less Hoop-La.
(3) Casual. For example, some of us are going to fish at this place at this time & other are welcome to join us. These could be more like: "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."
RI Apil 15th weekend catagory (3)?

Clancey's sounds great!
With respect to recent comments concerning categorization / clarification of the word "CLAVE" I would make the following comments:
First of all, who cares. Those who are jazzed with the prospect of being involved in a CLAVE do not bother to worry about official rules, titles or regulations. I know I don't. But I do know what this is really all about and I'd be happy to oblige.
Having arranged somewhere in the order of a dozen fishing get-togethers of various intensities (CLAVES) on both coasts and some rivers in between... I would *PROPOSE* that for the sake of those who care about official titles and things:
Conclave - An angling event involving:
1) overnight arrangements and significant planning effort
2) relatively large number of participants depending on venue, typically enough so that multiple locations can be scouted and reported to potentially focus the entire group on the hottest zones before the conclusion of the gathering.
3) an event that bridges groups, organizations, regions, BULLETIN BOARDS, http://220.127.116.11/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif and all that superficial stuff!
Of course, fishing a steelhead river would be different than fishing Nauset Beach or Bahia Honda State Park, so the number of anglers would of course vary.
Objective is to have fun, make friends, catch fish. I think people's enthusiasm to use the word partially stems from the totally awesome memories and experiences of the past.
I'll never forget Stephen Van Slyke's face when he hooked his first 16 pound ocean coho salmon on a herring tube fly off the north coast of the Olympic peninsula, or the look of a visiting New Yorker when seeing a 38 inch steelhead in the trout-sized flows of the upper Kalama, or the sunset on Race Point on the Outer Limits, or anything about the Boneclave.
I find myself saying this a lot lately, but "what's in a word?"
Mini-clave: Whatever you want it to be.
Get together: no need for a definition.
I, for one, don't really care about definitions but it might be helpful to know what degree of involvement an event is going to require by the naming convention.
By the level of enthusiasm we've seen, it's going to be a fun year!

Thank You Juro for the clarifications. I think the fact that people (me included) were be cautious about what to call a Clave, when and where, bodes well for the group. Until last year I didn't know jack squat about Claves. So I for one was just trying to show due credit and respect for the Clave Masters. I'm glad we were being considerate.
Secondly, it's evan better that your leaving it wide open to interpretation. Man we can make up anything we want. That's as free as the web! Cool.
As for "The Spring Run Mini-Clave" we will be rounding up more info over the next few weeks. Until then, lets wait for that first fishing report. Who will give it? Any bets? I doubt I could tell the difference between a holdover schoolie and a sea lice ridden one.
Good morning from rainy LA.
I will see what the availability of the cottage is for that May weekend. In addition to Pete and myself, there would be 3 other beds, a sofa and floor space for any die hards.
**I will get a confrimation on the cottage this week so we can figure out who's staying where
I will volunteer our beat up old Suburban as a shuttle so we could move up to 6 guys & gear comfortably.
**FISHING Being a SWFF night stalker and tying into the night thread, how about a post Clancy's outing??
i posted my reply to the early thread, let me know if you guys set up a meeting place for day-trippers. i've got a 2 and a 4yr old at home so it's doubtful i can go for the weekend... bummer cuz my sister has a place in harwich i might have snagged( maybe i'll try to talk to her if it looks like my wife will cut me loose for the weekend) tom
Hi guys, just thought I'd let you know that there is a possibility of another house in the Marnston Mills area.
I will not know if I and the house will be availible until after the schools spring break.
