Striped Bass - New inland waters striped bass regulations will become effective January 1,
2001, following a unanimous vote of the Fisheries and Wildlife Board. On the Connecticut River
within Massachusetts borders, anglers will be allowed to possess 1 striped bass per day between
24" and 30" total length inclusive. Stripers measuring greater than 30" and less than or equal to
40" may not be possessed. One striper per day greater than 40" in total length may also be kept.
In all other inland waters of the Commonwealth one striper per day with a minimum length of 30"
may be possessed.

Interesting scoop Sully!

I assume this is an attempt to limit the retention of brood aged females on the CT river system in exchange for less prolific fish in the smaller / too big class. I guess I am for it if the time periods are staggered to allow each size class to reach the spawning grounds. Another fear is that people will flock there to keep 24" fish. The 40" mark probably does not encourage people to target them http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif

If the system has an abundance of 25" - 39" fish, this would be a good plan to protect them. If it's full of schoolies like most, it's a recipe for mass population reduction at the low end. I would like to see an artificial only program in such waters too, if the intent is to protect big bass from death then bait should be excluded.

Maine's slot probably encourages more out-of-state anglers to go for the purpose of keeping small fish. It makes more sense to do this within a particular river system than it does at a state-wide level.

speaking of fish size what is the scoop on R.I. stripers? are they 30" also or are they some other size? why the heck don't the feds dictate this (migratory fishery), the way they do waterfowl? Tom D

I fly fish for stripers in the Conn river. each spring. I average about ten fish a season only fishing about three times. All of the fish I catch are about 30 to 33 inches. Seems strange but that all I get for sizes. I have seen other people with 36-40 inch and a few larger but I have not caught them. I have never gotten smaller fish there but have seen them going through the fishway.
