: RI Clave question
10-18-2000, 03:12 PM
I'm not officially in the Clave but will be down tomorrow (Thursday) and one of the weekend days. Any easy way of IDing people, like hats? Wouldn't mind putting a few faces to names when I'm there. I'll likely be wearing a pretty non descript long navy blue jacket, hip boots, and navy blue ski hat (assuming it's a cold start), and glasses. The bright red Abu hat will come out later if it warms up.
Starting at either C-town or Quonny (Fresh Pond Rocks) two hours before dawn from shore and working my way west. Most likely chucking hardware or eels, which should make me stand out from this crowd ;).
Latest report from last weekend in South County was that fishing was great IF you had a small boat and were able to get a few hundred yds offshore. Albie pods breaking here and there as well. But very little tight-to-beach action. I'm still hopin' though...
10-18-2000, 03:18 PM
Sully and I will keep an eye out for ya as we do similar western sweep.
Question: Why skipping the Wall and starting at Charlsetown?
No faith in the wall at dawn outgoing?

I mentioned that we might all tie something red to the passenger side mirror of our vehicles. I didn't get any response to that, but maybe mentioning it again will have an effect(?). We were going to try for hats, but until we find a sugar daddy, we'll have to stick with something more low tech ;) Either way, stop by Burlingame around 6 PM -- if you're down on Saturday -- for dinner and social hour. We will be in the area of sites 99-108. All are welcome. I'll have extra hamburgers and hot dogs just in case we run low on anything.
Thanks for the report. I had a feeling things were going to heat up down there this past weekend. Sorry it didn't work out for the shore crowd. I will be bringing my small boat, but I'm hoping this storm will chase the bait into shore and that the bass and blues will follow. Here's hoping.

We'll be there for sure in Terry's wheels, green Toyota PU. Are you still driving the same car? What's the milage on it now? http://220.127.116.11/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif" border="0" align="middle">Did you lose the gardening hat at the canal? <img src="http://18.104.22.168/images/flytalk/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle"> <img src="http://22.214.171.124/images/flytalk/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">
I'll be wearing the same light gray / green visor St. Croix hat, light brown Orvis waders and WWII U.S. issue color green slicker. Oh yeah, and lugging the spinning insurance. Hopefully I won't be smelling like skunk. <img src="http://126.96.36.199/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif
Bill I just got a report of a blitz tonight between Watch Hill, and Napatree. It is hit or miss the fish are there one night and somewhere else the next. I am going down tomorrow AM to scout around. I will be somewhere between Watch Hill and Charlestown. I always stop at Weekapaug Bait and Tackle

It's hard not to sound like an ad, or just a fishing yuppie but:
I'll be wearing Orvis waders, Simms boots (brown leather freshwater w/felt since it's all I've got) and a Blue Northern Trading Company cap (big trout emblem, olive/kahky colored), Maui Jim Volcanos (black), with maroon colored wind breaker.
Drive a black Volvo sedan, or Honda Odyssey minivan - haven't decided if I'll be sleepin in the van or not Friday night.
10-19-2000, 12:08 PM
I will tie a red bandana on my red Dodge pickup truck.
10-19-2000, 12:15 PM
I will.... tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree it's been...oops wrong venue.
I like bigcat's idea and will do the same with red bandana, not a banana. We don't want to go there.
10-19-2000, 12:16 PM
I mentioned this on another thread...but it's now looking like Saturday is my day...blue explorer (Plate = "HUCK IT") -- grey pungo...expect to start from shore @ dark/early dawn probably around quonny...and then launch when the light (& hopefully weather/sea conditions) permits.
yellow jacket, green chest pack
yellow pfd when I am seaborne...

Light Green RAV 4 with red ribbon on the sideview mirror, boat trailer behind.
I'll be wearing a bright red flats shirt (birthday gift) under dark brown neoprene waders, green stripping basket. I wear glasses and people say I look Islamic or Hindu, though I'm actually Italian (half Sicilian).
10-19-2000, 01:17 PM
People tell me I look Italian, but I'm 1/2 German, 1/2 Russian.
10-19-2000, 01:34 PM
Maroon F150 PU with a CCA sticker on the Back window. I'll try ro find a red rag before I head out. I ALWAYS wear a red Bo-Sox Cap & usually a black hooded fleece.
I will be down Fri. around 15:00, but I will NOT have me cell phone til Saturday. My wife is coming down Sat. to do some Photography: 1-Digital, 1-APS, & 1 35mm SLR, so hopefully we'll get some good shots. AND, she actually asked if I would bring an extra spin rod for her!
10-19-2000, 01:57 PM
Duh!!!! It's so obvious. The sign should be, Leave your car headlights on. This way we can see who's here not only from the parking lot, but from the beach as well.
10-19-2000, 02:00 PM
Green Grand Cherokee. People say I look Protestant, but I'm actually Agnostic. :)
I do know a couple of Islamic Italians, and I'm sure there are some Hindu Italians too.

Ok, but I challenge you to find a single Southern Baptist Italian http://188.8.131.52/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif
Sorry. Didn't mean to use religion as an description of my appearance. I just meant that people usually assume I'm from some Middle Eastern country. Oh, hell.... HERE:
Hope to see you this weeknd, Steve.
10-19-2000, 03:00 PM
Hey Al, you sure your name's not "Abdul-uca"?! That sunset gave you quite the tan! See you on the beaches.
-Steve- "Sultan of the Suds"
I'll be wearing a look of EXTREME FRUSTRATION!!!
Have fun guys I wish you all a safe & successful trip.
Wish I was joining you.
Roop, Wish you were coming.
I like Al's idea, a picture is worth..........
That's me and the horrible fate that befell me last year at Napatree.
I'll be with Chuck Reid and Dana in Chuck's White Ford minivan, I'll bring a can of red spray paint so we can make it really stand out.
10-19-2000, 04:36 PM
OK, see the red Bo-Sox Cap. Oh, there's a fish too!
10-19-2000, 04:38 PM
Jim, Greg: grandstanders!
Jim: Do I know you? I thought you were just a guy with a "Will fish for food" sign. http://184.108.40.206/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif
Terry, it was the only picture I had. I do believe you had a bowl or two of the wonderful striper stew the Esteys made from that fish http://220.127.116.11/images/flytalk/Happy.gif. I must confess that I got that fish on a chunk of Mackerel on a rig I now refer to as the WINCH a 12' conventional with a Penn 535. If I'm not mistaken Gregg got that beauty on a deep eel, WOW. This year it's nothing but the flyrod. See you guys soon.

Holy Crikees, that's a big fish, Greg!
Too bad your brother couldn't scale the image after scaling the fish http://18.104.22.168/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif
10-19-2000, 10:09 PM
Green Grand Am with "TP" parking tag on rearview. If I can find a red ribbon I'll tie it on my antenna. Well, as long as we're throwing photos around:
10-20-2000, 09:24 AM
Quentin: Very nice King! Where'd you grab that Badboy?
10-20-2000, 10:05 AM
Thanks! I caught it from the Succonesset rip during Boneclave 2000. I assumed it was a Spanish mackerel, although I did wonder if it could be a king when I first got it to the boat.
10-20-2000, 10:45 AM
Definately a King. The difference between the two becomes obvious after a while. It's just like the Albie vs. Bonito I.D. thing. Kings have the black dorsal fin with a white spot (like yours) on the base. Spanish have very prominent yellow spots and more blue colors to them. Kings also have a more elongated body shape (hence the term "snakes" used to describe them) Plus, if that was a Spanish, it'd have been close to a World record as they don't run very big. 4 pounders are considered good sized, and I belive the World Record is a little over 10#.
Here is a Spanish mackerel for comparison
10-20-2000, 11:16 AM
Thanks for the fish ID Steve. Always happy to add another species to my "life list", especially when I also have a photo of it. (Thanks Marvin!)
10-20-2000, 06:02 PM
If I see Arabs with red bandanas, beige hats, and green slickers pointing their headlights at the beach, I know I've found the group ;)...Or something like that...
Sounds like it's a whole lot easier just to ask anyone flyfishing who they are (at least I've got Terry and Sully pegged more or less). Anyway, I'll be down Saturday, it looks like.
Forgot about that damn tournament. Expect crowds in the more popular spots.
Was down there Thursday. LOTS of fish coming through all day long but 200-300 yds offshore. Beach action is very hit and miss. I'll probably start at Quonny (Fresh Pond Rocks) and work my way west. 'Fraid the breachways are going to be a zoo..
10-21-2000, 11:31 AM
Ugh, woke up this AM feeling horrible (ear infection). Weekend is therefore up in the air. Leave some cows out there for me!
take care of that ear infection, don't rush it... my son had one last week... back yesterday... ouch!!!! Tom D
