These are very exciting numbers.
More exciting still is imagining higher numbers still but being reported at Howland Dam many miles upriver. Hope plans and funding to remove Veazie and Great Works are still in motion.

This is great news for the Penobscott salmon, but even better news is the 44 salmon that have returned to the small Narraguagus River in Downeast Maine. These improved Maine runs along with the current reports from the Canadian rivers seem to indicate improved sea survival. Let's hope it will continue.
After approximately 700 of the Penobscot run have been taken for broodstock, the rest are put over the Veazie Dam. Very few of these salmon even get as far as the Milltown Dam. They never get to good spawning water. Most of the smolts they do produce get chewed up in the power turbines on their way back to the ocean. This group of salmon is essentially wasted. A May and June catch and release season would not hurt the Penobscot salmon run one bit.

Here is what I wrote last year. I have been working on the information for three years now as I just did not believe the poor returns had to do only with river specific reasons. The ocean environment is the key factor. It will take another few years to monitor the data to make any firm conclusion.

I was a temporary member of Veazie salmon club for a few years. It was nice to throw a line after work in the evening. Barbless is the way to do it. It would certainly boost the local economy. That's a lot of fish in a great big river. Saw a seal taking numerous fish one afternoon 10 years ago below that dam.
The sooner they raise the $ then the sooner they will remove the dams. Then there is a chance for recovery. Remember the president's salmon? Maybe one day!
