Five wild Atlantic salmon population segments in Atlantic Canada and Quebec have been designated endangered and one as threatened, with a further four as of special concern by COSEWIC, Canada’s independent scientific body that recommends official change of status for species.

The Atlantic Salmon Federation is studying the recommendations. To read more on these changes, learn what rivers could be affected, and to download a map, go to:

Important populations have been designated as of special concern, while several others are listed as not at risk.

In NB, outer Bay of Fundy rivers are up for Endangered status, as are all the rivers on the outer side of NS, including Cape Breton. Rivers from the Margaree to the Miramichi, Restigouche and Bonaventure may be changed to "Special Concern". Anticosti is up for Endangered Status, and south coast Newfoundland rivers like the Conne are facing Threatened Status.
