: Big Brother Day

Please give some consideration toward participating in the annual Flyfishing Forum Big Brother day this year.

We'll try to schedule closer to Father's Day this year (June) for a number of reasons including better results for the kids, greenhead issues last year, etc.

This is an experience that enriches the lives of these children, gives a little back to the brothers for their generous gift of companionship to the kids, and helps the organization provide a quality offering to the volunteer base that makes up the group.

However without fail we too walk away richer for having done it, and are better men for doing it.

This event is at the very core of what we represent. Help me to make 2009 the best year ever for the cause.

thanks in advance,
Juro

Just checked my schedule- I'm free the weekend of Father's Day (Sunday, 6/21), as well as the following weekend- NOT free the weekend of June 13-14 or July 4 weekend. Hopefully the usual suspects will be in attendance, as well as some new faces ;)

I'm in. Missed last year, and regret. My boys, Chris and Brad may be available, depending on the day.

I couldn't be there last year so I really hope I can make it this year. I probably can't do the weekend of June 27/28. I think the other weekends in June are clear, although I do have this nagging thought that I'm forgetting about some other plans that were made for me for some weekend in June.

I would like to do it: If it is the weekend 27/28 June, I'm in; 20/21 June I cannot.

Juro,

As an educator I know how important these kind of events can be in the life of a child. I would like to join you and the others, but it depends on the date. I have a wedding to attend on the weekend of 27-28. If you don't mind having a rookie along, I will be glad to help.

I should be good any time in June unless I get pulled "offshore". This is always one of the highlights of the summer.

Any chance we can firm up an early June date sooner rather than later?

I hope the Boston Big Brothers are doing o.k. I heard on the news recently that they are struggling to survive in many cities due to the economic downturn.

Steve if you can attend it is worth the drive. I have participated in two events so far & will most likely make this years event as well. However June is just too far away right now to plan for.

Juro if the stars are in proper alignment I will be there for sure

I will try and make it again this year and take the photos for the event. June looks good right now and a quick firm date would help.

Would some door prize/name drawn from the hat giveaways be fun for the kids? I can think of a few fly tackle donations, but I'm not sure what types of things would be meaningful.

Yes, such things are a great highlight to the day.

We typically put something different like in the box (like a different color fly or something) and after all the flyboxes are handed out we award the rod/reel setup or whatever the bonus prize is to a lucky winner.

But the more of the ceremonial things we do the more the kids will cherish the day.

Big Brothers are having a hard time dealing with the economic woes. Might be a bit of work raising the funds for picnic / Rip Ryder this year, otherwise I will choose a location without the ferry ride (sadly).

Stay tuned...

Juro - how much do you need ?

My Bank is looking to sponsor small community events to raise our profile a bit in the NE.

As part of my job I am committed to one community event per month, this will be my June one

PM me with the needs/details and I'll see what i can do.

Mark.

I am new here, but if you can use someone who knows nothing about spin fishing, I think that I will be able to help out on either of the proposed weekends . I would also be more than happy to make a monetary contribution to the costs of the event.

Hey gang -

Sorry I've been strapped trying to hang on in this economy and haven't been as attentive as I should for this...

date is coming up quick!

Mark - thanks for the generous offer i will contact you right away. Funding support would be for lunches, boat ride. Alternatively we can bring our own lunches this year considering the tough times (?) I will let Emily know there is a possibility of help for the event.

Another cost-cutting measure would be to fish Morris Island verses taking the ferry. Suggestions welcome.

*** additional volunteers wanted ***

let's keep the tradition alive and kickin'

*** let's get a final tally for those who can participate on the 13th or 14th ***

I have emailed BB's and will likely not take the ferry this time, opting for fishing on Morris Island at the bluffs to keep it simple.

I will also seek donations for sandwich fixin's and water for the kids from outdoor companies, optionally they can pack a lunch from home.

The important thing is we have enough mentors for kids to inspire an appreciation for the outdoors in honor of our fathers who did the same for us years ago.

I will post updates from Emily as soon as I hear back.

Hey Juro,

I just saw the PM and your update on this thread...

We are a small office but we have to go through the machinations of the corporate parent to do this - can you PM me Emily's contact details so we can try and get this done.

The donation will likely be small - $100/$150 and if all else fails, i'll spot this from my own pocket.

I can commit to the 13th with a caveat - my dad had a minor heart attack on Saturday so i may have to fly out to the UK with a drop of a heartbeat. literally.

cheers

Mark.

John -

If it's conditional to your being on cape (which makes sense) then I can't count you as a definite. Let me know either way.

thanks

Juro,

If its saturday, what time do I need to be there at the reserve, and what time does this end ?

The current plan is to start around 8:30-9am. The National Parks people will take the kids in the afternoon after lunch. Some changes are taking place as we speak, so more specifics will follow in a day or two.

If you are available in the morning and need to leave in the early afternoon I'm sure that will work thanks! Specific times to follow...

Low Tide at Stage is 10:36 on Saturday which means ...

the clam flat on Morris Island will make a great softball field!!! :D

juro

Saturday 13th, 9am. No boat ride, walk to the bluffs on the Morris Island south side. Low tide mid-morning, so we should catch the last of the drop and part of the flood. If you prefer to be fishing down there earlier let me know and I will walk the crew down there.

We have 16 pairs and need (ideally) 16 mentors.

Bring your own lunch (budget does not allow catering of sandwiches this year).

We will have shore lunch with the kids and bigs down there and then they will continue to the Refuge HQ for a tour with the National Parks staff.

If you wish to stay down there and fish the rest of the flood, I will escort them back up to the refuge HQ.

Sunday I will be fishing North Monomoy all day if any mentors want to join me. Tides are not ideal but we will likely have very good fishing with the recent news.

Sunday I'll be kayaking if the weather behaves.

Probably NM so see you out there.

I'll be toting the clam rake in addition to fly gear :D

I'm interested in helping out but not sure I'm "mentor" material. Still learning the Cape myself. What all is involved?

Are we teaching flyfishing?

If not, I've got a spinning rod that was given to me that I could bring but to be quite honest I haven't used one in over15 years so I'm lost as to what lures to buy.

Glad to have you. Believe me they'll look at you like Gadabout Gaddis!

Sluggos, poppers maybe a swimmer (but they are pricey!). Only rule = no PINK sluggos :) :)

Sure they work, but the stripers are only trying to eliminate them from the gene pool by killing them

Juro,

Please put me down as commited for the event on Saturday. I've got one spinning rod I will bring and will purchase some lures. Will try to find another spinning rod. Any more advice on lures and set up appreciated.

Anyone plan on fishing early?

Joe

Emily would like to know how many people we can provide. I would like to get at least 8, we are short of that now.

Please RSVP by tonight.

I have been able to clear the decks--can be there Saturday AM. Like others, I have been able to scrounge a spin rod, but I haven't a clue about how to use it and need some real specific advice on lures-like color, size, model etc. Where is the meet-up spot and what time? Please, Sun God, be with us!

i'll be there at 8.30 on Saturday.

I spoke to Emily and we are donating $100 for the kids lunches.

Meetup spot, For those not familiar with Morris Island, directions to the refuge:

http://www.fws.gov/northeast/monomoy/monomap.html

rendezvous at 08:30

For spin rod I would recommend small sluggos / ronz etc. - 5" - 7" in various colors - even pink - just don't let Juro see :lildevl:

Single hooks are a good idea since they can easily be rendered barbless for safety and ease of unhooking.
