I was casting a #28 midge when suddenly... WHAM!

Seriously: I really missed the gang at Rhody. Our British Columbia clave was the only acceptable excuse for missing it. WOW! I just realized our flyfishing community "kicked it out" in two places at once! We simulclaved! How cool is that?

That is one hell of a fish. A few summers ago while I was passing through Oregon I stalked a few steelhead in the Deschutes River. I caught a few small fish and, despite their small size, I was still very happy. If I caught "your" fish I would have been ecstatic. I hope that you felt the electric wave of ecstasy that "your" fish deserves.
That fish is unbelievable. The scenary is breathtaking. I need to start dabbling in the freshwater adventures. I have never done any before and have tossed the idea around recently, but now it is a definite. Glad to hear you had a blast.

Way to go!!!
That #28 midge looks suspiciously like a #8 cadis pupae. Or maybe the fish just has a bit of fall leaf stuck to its mouth? http://126.96.36.199/images/flytalk/Happy.gif
Did you get it on top?

were you fishing that #28 with 8x or 9x....
Hawkeye - good eye! That isn't a pink/orange tongue in it's mouth, it's the fly.
Nothing but dry line! The water was fast there as it dropped down the chute in the tailout, and it would come up and skate at the end of the swing on the floating Spey line. It would shimmy and slide side to side and I thought "hmmm... that looks real fishy". I took a step or two down the bank and cast, swung again; looking for the fly to pop up at the end of the swing and SHPLOOMP! A boil the size of my kitchen table rocked the pool and a bolt of lightning emptied my real, kicking the rapids into white froth along the way! I got lucky and landed her. I saw a lot of guys get their clocks cleaned - including our own Bill Littlewood who had two fish explode his leaders before upgrading to 15 pound tippet and landing his third hooked steelhead of the morning.
It was steelhead mecca. My mind is still there!

Sure beats the Missouri trout that I could not fish for because of the fires. A good friend of mine from Montana fishes for steelhead in BC and just loves it. Again great fish!!
Nice job man!
Spring run clave?
