I have news but do not want to broadcast it here. PM me if you fish this area already.
Access is easier now and a later gate closing is going up for vote to the towns people. A hearing is scheduled. We may get to fish the hatch later into the evening without worry of getting 'Locked In" at the Park.

Phil I appreciate the good intentions after the sandy point thing got you in trouble with still unnamed folks but I do not think ninigret is a secret based on the people count every year waiting for the worm hatch. Honestly many other ponds in the area are just a good and provide a little more seclusion.

Keeping fishing access open however is really important and we need more people writing in about this. Here is the email sent out by the town manager as posted on other boards. If you care about it you should write in and vote your support for the measure.

First, let me thank you for taking your time and writing to us regarding night time fishing access to Grassy Point on the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge.

This evening, the Town of Charlestown Parks and Recreation Commission voted (6 to 1) to modify Town Park hours to accommodate fishing access:

From May 1 through June 30, the Town Park will remain open from 5am - 10pm Sunday through Thursday.
On Fridays and Saturdays, the Park will remain open from 5am - midnight.
The National Wildlife Refuge hours will be adjusted accordingly as well.

This is a good start. Obviously, the Commission members were very interested in accommodating fishing access in partnership with the National Wildlife Refuge.

Additional steps are likely necessary. Since this change may require a change in Town Ordinances, it is likely that the Town Council will need to vote on the Park Hours change following public hearings.
We (the Refuge) will now follow-up up with the Police Department and with the Town Council as appropriate.

As things progress on this effort, we will keep you informed.

Thanks again,

Charlie

I had the very real pleasure of fishing Ninigret Pond last June and will fondly remember the experience as long as I can (Julie Brown quote). You Rhodies and nearby Connecticutt folks have a treasure there.

Wish I could fish it more often.

Cheers,

Eric

Sean. Still a little gun shy from that episode which I'm happy to have behind me. I don't feel I got in trouble more so than the people who were troubled over it. It's funny though. I fished it almost every day last year and never saw any of those unnamed / named people fishing there! It is a remote spot accessed only by boat so I still do not see what all the fuss was about. Enough said. Anyway........I wrote to Mr. Vandemoer and personally thanked him for his efforts for which I wrote in and supported. I agree with you on the other ponds but to my knowledge, none have been as reliable for many of us as the Grassy Point access. I have a hatch closer to home but it's no where near as predictable as Ninigret. The vote passed and I'm pretty sure the weekday evening gate closing can be tweaked with some additional support. One step at a time.
