Thanksgiving traditionally (in Oregon, anyway) marks the beginning of Winter Steelhead Season. I intend to open said season by flinging various feathered concoctions off my dock, since steelhead have to swim by it and I've never hooked one from the house before (we all have goals).

Anyway, to all us PNW steelheaders, go get 'em and keep the Forum posted on your success.

As the Salmon people say: Petri heil!

Cheers,

Hi Eric
Where did you get that from?

The expression is used by anglers in Germany.
These are not normally fly fishermen but bait guys who almost always kill what they catch.

Petri is St. Peter the patron saint of fishermen and heil is a salute which was more famous in the 30s and 40s and made popular by a short guy with a mustache.

Even though I live in Germany I would not dream of saying that.

"Petri heil"

I think Ernest Schwiebert was forever flinging that phrase around. I think it has more universal coinage than just Germany/Austria, but thanks for the backstory; I was totally unaware of the German connotation of the phrase being associated with bait fishers, let alone Hitler.

Petri dank

Cheers,

Eric
