: Danielsson service

I have the opportunity to purchase either a barely used Tibor Riptide, at a very reasonable price (under $500.) or a danielson LW8/12. After reading the discussion of both reels in the archives, I am leaning toward the danielsson. However, I am concerned about service on the danielsson. Has anyone sent a danielsson for service and would comment on the how long the turnover took and quality of the service?

Ron Larson, in Oregon, is still doing most of the service for Danielsson reels. Turnaround shouldn't be a problem, although it may not be quite as quick as for which Tibor is so famous.

I own both of those reels & would opt for the Tibor, unless the Danielsson is cheaper. The reason? Just as you state service.
My last few dealings with Ron were not all that good as he did not like to answer his emails and is was real slow returning phone messages. This was about a year ago I admit, but it sticks in my head. And was somewhat annoying. Of course things may have changed now.

I was trying to buy a HD reel for a Tuna rod near the end of his sales run. I ended up buying a Billy Pate Marlin as a result. A choice I do not regret.

Well since I've stuck my neck out on this topic a lot I guess my reputation rides on it somewhat so I got to ask...

Warren buddy you've got me curious about the service you needed... was it a problem or a question?

This whole reel stigma goes back a ways for me. When I moonlighted in a flyshop years ago I recommended other sealed drag reels which turned out to be bad advice. They all failed and I felt really bad.

But when I make recommendations for Danielsson reels I do so on a foundation of over ten years of service free performance first-hand.

The only incident I know of is the Sean and Sean bluefin tuna incident on a reel that went several years without maintenance, and to be honest I thought even that was unusual.

If don't don't mind cleaning a reel all the time and you have the money the Tibors are really nice. After a hard day on the water I don't even feel like brushing my teeth (but I do). If they could come up with a gadget to get rid of that routine and still keep my teeth I'd buy it too.

I can hear a follow up coming.... "uh oh better get Mako" :lildevl:

Get the tibor and you won't have to worry about sending it back. The most maintenance I have done on mine is spinning the handle under a tap and backing off the drag knob at the end of the week/weekend. Juro could probably do it while brushing his teeth (multitasking).

Juro I was trying to buy one before the change in sales policy. I had money to spend & Ron simply would not get back with me. When he finally did get back to me he was out of stock on the reel I wanted. I have yet to need repair on my 8eleven & doubt I will need any service for some time. I truly love my Danielsson & wish they were still readily available at a reasonable price again. I am looking at Ebay hoping to find a deal on a HD.

In addition, Ron went so far to tell me he didn't like email much & not keen on using it. My thoughts were, you better get with the program. Having said that I like Ron an awful lot he is a nice man to deal with, just he can be an independent old man & he lost a sale because of it. As a result I am reluctant to offer kind words about his service any more.

Like I said maybe things have changed now that he is not in the sales dept anymore.

By the way Juro with the dollar the way it is a Tibor is nearly the same price as a Danielsson right now give or take a few bucks.

Thanks Warren. I knew it thats price point was too good to last forever but I can't be acused of keeping the opportunity to myself - I passed the word best I could.

Warren,

The recent strength of US currency against major European currencies, including swedish SEK , made the Danielsson reels 7% less expensive within a few weeks.
It is already reflected on Danielsson website.
Hopefully the changes in in Washington will prolong the appreciation of USD and the goods form Europe become less expensive.

As for service, the best one is the one you don't need...........

Thanks guys...an interesting discussion. I am a bit torn, but probably will go with the Tibor. Although the riptide is $90 more, I am worried about the time it would take to get service on the Danielsson. Right now I own a Ross Canyon. After using it for 2 seasons, I am not satisfied with its performance. Ross service is very good, but the drag has been problematic even though I meticuoulsy care for the reel. I am looking forward to owning a quality reel. How many times do I have to learn not to be penny wise and pound foolish?

The Canyon had notorious problem with the drag, even when used in fresh water environment and it was the main reason I decided to look at Danielsson at that time sold with Loop logo.
Since then all my reels are LW, HD and Control ( eight reels) except two Saracione trouts which are on the order.

Since Ron is currently taking care of service only, which practically involves older, not sealed " original" reels, as LW, HD and Control are bullet proof unless someone really fires at the reel with 44..........:tsk_tsk:

I fully understand that many flyfishers are worry about service, I should say a repair service, as the only two reels which are practically maintenance free are Charlton and Danielsson ( LW, HD and Control ).

Do the new loop s/w reels have the same drag mechanism as the Daneilsson? I saw an ad for them in a fishing magazine and they look pretty cool.

I have heard some good things about the performance and cost of these Colton reels..... Although ,I have no idea about the servicing issues...just passing this along.

The Loop reels are made in South Korea not by Danielsson. I can't see how the drag can be the same, as it has most likely a different design and it made by different manufacturer.

Many reels look cool until you start to use them...........

The fact that the reel is made in South Korea doesn't mean it's a bad reel. The Koreans have the ability of machining a quality reel. FishHawk

My point was to indicate that it is not that same reel and drag as Danielsson.
So many still think that Loop reels and Danielsson are identical.........

BTW, everybody has ability, but the key is design!!!!

The bast machine is a substitute for inferior design which which over the time will produce problem, regardless where the reel/product is produce ( Asia, US , Sweden ect.) and regardless of product: car, bike, plane you name.

It is well known that Honda Accord made in US is better made car them many from Chrysler or GMC.

The key is design not who made them.
Ask flyfisher form Scandinavia about the quality of the two reels and they experience over the last 4 years ( after marketing breakout ) in one case and 10 years in the other case.

Ok then, Tibors and Ables are well designed superior Reels no doubt about it. FishHawk.

I know its a bit late for a response but I'll say Danielsson. I stopped some decent fish tonight with the Danielsson and it performed big time stopping stripers from wrapping me up on some pilings and docks at a Boston shore UDL. They are def worth checking out. Another option that is really sweet too is the Nautilus NV of which my friend uses and it too has a killer drag and is one sexy reel. I got to see the reel in action tonight and it was superb. Cant go wrong with all the choices out there but these 2 brands are up there in performance etc.
