: Deception Pass

Went to a wedding on Whidbey Island last week and decided to pack along a rod in hopes of catching a salmon swimming through Deception Pass. Casting off the rocks near the southwest entrance, I caught a nice ling cod on the top of the flood (tide was just starting out).

Deep water express and Rhoddy Clouser.

Is it unusual to catch ling cod on flies? Seems it shouldn't be. Especially if I can do it.

Just wondering.

Caught no salmon nor sea run cutthroat.

Did land some nice bull kelp.

Cheers,

Eric

I fished off that point near the parking area once, a lot of shaker salmon around that day. As I recall there are occasionally some good kings taken off that point this time of year. First time I've heard of a ling on a fly.... could be a new tippet-class world record :)
