Ok.... so we are about a week away from the clave. :D
To all the locals and the knowledgable: What kind of bait and size should we be trying to mimmick for next weekend?

please edit my list of potentials
Sandeels
Silversides
Herring
Menhaden
Squid
crabs
shrimp

Any favorite patterns as a "go to" fly?
Thanks... and I hope this generates a GREAT discussion! :D

Anything on a hook will work.

Anyone that tells you there is a secret tie for spring at the elbow is smoking something. I think the issue is just tie something sturdy that will hold up to being chewed on all day by fish. I fish 3-5inch flatwings but most fish clousers or deep eels, they all work.

Anything that is foul proof and durable. Small surf candies in olive and white with a little chartruese take a good beating. And then there is the Tooty Fruity Fish Hawk is famous for. Loads will work but the anticipation will get you back on the vise. Have fun tying for the Clave!

The previous guys are right... anything... I usually just grab my old clousers... since many of the fish are small (not all), I usually take my olive or chartruse over white clouser about 2 inches or 3 long.... bucktail or synthetic... and that's about it.

thanks all.
any herring, menhaden or squid around? Do you fish bigger stuff in the rips/surf/deeper water?

Squid, Herring, BUnker - yes to all three. They are very much around this time of year.

The big fly = big fish approach can pay off at times so by all means bring them along!

It will test your resolve when everyone around you is getting a fish a chuck on small clousers etc.

But when 'big mama' hits and your drag starts screeming it feels pretty good. :smokin:

Last year for us it boiled down to four flies:

Size 1 pink/yellow/white hollow fly;

Size 2 or 1 chart/white fish hair clouser;

Size 2 or 1 Tutti-Frutti in ultra hair;

Size 1/0 or 2/0 Chart Big Eye Deceiver

My buddy Dave used only the hollow fly and the tutti and he caught tons of fish

My buddy Tom used only the chart/white clouser and he caught tons of fish

I used the tutti and the big eye and I caught tons of fish.:razz:

Jim- check your e-mail.

Went down to the refuge last night to see what was going on....no luck, but as I got back up into the parking lot I ran into a regular who works at the Goose Hummock...told me he and his buddies have been having success in Barnstable Harbor with mostly chartreuse flies...showed me a ?bucktail over rabbit Zonker over ostrich hearl pattern (with a little flash) in chartreuse he says the bass were nailing there a few days earlier.
Just thought I'd pass that along...

Vineyard sound bass I'be been cleaning lately have either herring or peanut bunker in them. In either case, a full profile fly with some yellow in the belly seems to be the ticket.

Thanks for the intel.... how big were the herring and peanuts. Have you seen any adult bunker or squid in V. Sound?

Herring are, well, herring-sized, maybe 10". Peanuts seem 3"-4". Squid are scarce in the sound this year, for some reason.
