The out-migration of smolts is underway here on the Alsea and the armadas of cormorants are feasting, along the the stalking herons. We've had good flows in the river recently, and, if stream survival was normal, the little guys should have a fair chance of swiftly passing the ganged predators.

Winds have been strong out of the northwest for the past week, and hopefully this will get the ocean churning up nutrients for the basis of the food chain.

On another matter, the proposed closure of the ocean south of the Columbia to recreational and commercial salmon fishing will be acted on in the next few days. It doesn't look good right now for those wanting to fish offshore.
