: Hip Shooter and bonefish

Not too long ago there was a discussion here on using a striping basket when bonefishing. I used one for the first time on a trip the first of this month.
The conditions were difficult. There was a lot of wind, the water was cool and not enough sun. We spent a lot of time wading or walking the shore and hunting. The Hip Shooter was nice under these conditions. You didn't have to worry about your line, if you saw a fish you were ready to go. I didn't find it to be in the way when wading, casting or striping. When I did see a fish and cast to it I forgot about the basket and cast and striped like I normally would. Then it was back to storing the line in the basket and wading again.
It also comes in handy if you want to tie on a new fly or tippet. You can just put your rod in it and and have both hands free.
Thats my 2 cents. Don't know if I would use it under normal conditions but I was glad I had it this trip.

Hi Swalt

where were you fishing?

A quick release nylon gear strap added...
Works for me...
And when my strip strike is over zealous...
No worries or pain when I wack my hand on the basket!

I like the setup. Did you cut slits in it to put the belt through like that? If so do you still need the basket belt hook?

After slicing the slits to accommodate the 1 1/2" belt, I decided to leave the stainless hook on because it makes the junction more rigid/subtstantial and also pushes the basket out slightly...
The line tending fingers are very effective...
The kit is a work in progress but after tweeking it, I've tuned it by ear and I really like the tone and overall results...
My Orvis basket is hereby relegated to standby loaner status!

Scott at the Bear's Den has them!!!
I wear the basket with the belt a bit low slung...
I don't wade deep so it hasn't been an issue...
It can be comfortably worn at the waste and the strip is comfortable and natural...
Soft sides eliminate dinging your hand during an over eager basket colliding strip strike...for me and my vulnerable left hand, worth the price of admission!
The basic basket comes with a high density "ventillated" thick foam bottom insert that press fits into a groove around the bottom of the basket...drains rapidly!
A solid non-ventillated interchangable foam "boat bottom" is also available...
Line management fingers are pressed into the stout foam bottom and do a very nice job at defeating tangles...
10" X 14" oval across and 10" deep...
My new favourite basket!!!
No going back!
