: Check your profiles... you may be deleted

I interrupt the pseudo-fly jig and pink sluggo threads to make an important announcement to urge members to check your profiles...

If your 'favorite fly' is the same as your login your account will be nuked in a few days

Sorry, it's necessary for me to put some anti-spam logic in place.

I have been spending waaaay too much time manually cleaning out spammers so we don't have to wake up to those horrible voluptuous naked bodies. Hey wait why am I doing this again? Just kidding of course, the vile posts we have seen are totally unacceptable in this friends and family environment.

You might have noticed some early morning and late night posts why I do this chore, but I have some ideas on automating it but no accounts will be able to have a favorite fly that is not a real fly going forward.

Even if it's not your favorite fly :)

I confess I have no idea what you are talking about.

That's good - it means we've been getting the job done. It also points out that there's a lot more than chat involved in running a site like this, not the least of which is cost but that's another story.

** Veterans need not be concerned.

Take a look at your profile, there is a "favorite fly" field that has been required for some time now. You may be grandfathered in before that.

This was put into place to force spammers (which has been a serious problem but behind the scenes apparently).

Spamming programs are getting around it by re-entering their login name as favorite fly.

E.g. username: "hotbabesinheat", favorite fly: "hotbabesinheat"

If any users try to register for the Forum in such a manner, or have done in the past their account will be deleted programatically. This way I will not have to spend the time deleting them manually as I do every day.

Does that clear it up? Keep the questions coming if you don't get it. This is a topic better discussed openly than in PM's or the moderator forum.

(I will be in a secure lab for the day in snowy Detroit, moderators could you explain if there are more questions while I am not on line thanks)

Yes, I have a question.

Can my favorite fly be a Jig?

Juro, Frank, aka Domino Boy, asked me by e'mail to pass on that he's having problems. I advised him to check this thread.

I think I am ok...I had put that my favorite fly is the total fly for any flyrod...called the "jbasser fly". A fly with just the old days.:hihi:

I also think I am OK as there is nothing in "favorite fly" box now. For those of us that may have nothing in the box, would we make life easier for the decision maker by putting an actual fly name in there?

No problem if you have nothing in there but for new 'members' to register it is required. This forces spambots to put something in there and luckily they are not very creative.

I can filter by signup date and post count as well to protect old members. I ran a few queries and it's not going to affect any existing folks at all. I manually delete these anyway.

Of course the DB will be backed up beforehand just in case but honestly I think that will just be a waste of disk space for this straightforward procedure.

Yes, I have a question.

Can my favorite fly be a Jig?:hihi:

I was going to ask if my favorite fly could be a sluggo...

A favorite TU forum has been shut down because of spam attacks. It has been overwhelmed by porn/parmacutical offers. Do you have any hints to avoid this? PM me if needed.

Go ahead guys... and make sure you change your login to be the same :lildevl: :lildevl:

Millerbrown -

We had a terrible porn spam problem. Every morning would be dreadful and you had to be quick with the delete button. Like most men I appreciate the beauty of the female form but what was on here was far, far beyond porn - repulsive.

Anyway, we first forced email confirmation for signups. Helped a little but todays spambots automate the confirmation as well.

Some companies can afford the cheap local labor to pay real people to do forum spamming.

Thus I put in the favorite fly entry as REQUIRED. You can not register without a fly entry anymore.

But this meant someone had to decide whether the input was a fly or not.

So the third step is to automate the rejection of any registration that does not provide a reasonable answer to that question.

I am thinking there are other ways to foil them too.

**** but the biggest problem is people have email spam filters and never know they got the confirmation email ***

So pass the word, if people can't sign up tell them to check their spam mail and click on the confirmation to get their account enabled.
