Hows everyone doing ? Things are fine up here in Maine. Its time again to get in my vacation requests( early as usual) and was wondering if a date has or can be set for the 2008 spring clave got to make sure I have my dates correct. Thanks DREW

My vote...

Third weekend in May usually seems about right. Between Mothers day and Memorial day weekends and the tides are interesting though not extreme.

Fred is right, third weekend in May. Last year it was Saturday, May 19th. This year, Saturday, May 17th. New moon on the following Monday, but that time of year, strong tides aren't necessary.

I would hope that we can pick one of the days for a rip trip. Now that we can take more than 10 guys...I would think we can fill the slots, but I suspect we might not get the "whole" crowd on one trip so maybe schedule rip trips each day of the Clave so that all clave participants can go atleast one day and then the usual spots the other days...Weather permitting naturally and if Keith will be in operation.

thats a new record for clave anticipation... December of the previous year! :smokin:

I have a sneaky feeling it will be even better than last year which would be mind-boggling.

I am hoping to have the boat back in the water in April to do some cruises during the kids April Vacation, so I will be in the water for the Clave.

I am with any of those dates, but we are early here...who and how many FF guys are orgainizing this...dates, the stonehorse, etc. etc. Don't we need the usual formal orgainization before throwing the dates willy nilly?...We Know it's May, but it seems futle to agree on dates before we get the other details done..just IMHO.

Dam, I am booked to come out to CC on the 2nd June for 15 days. I just don't think I can run to coming out for an extra two weeks from May 16. Appelaing to me but not my wife who I have not taken a holiday with for about 5 years now or my principles who sadly expect me to do work for the measely retainer they pay me. If I could wangle a long weekend maybe but oh boy that jeg lag is a pain. I recover and then off again. Still couple years time I will hopefully be finished with this lark called work. I see you can rent houses in CC in spring and early summer for very low rents. So I got plans for the future.

Mike, see you in June, and you are always welcome company on the flats. Think this year, and the lessons should be golden for 08. Saints Landing is an interesting place, and all places west of there. Since you are a tourist, there are a couple of spots...

Warren and Jim,

Thanks. It would be fantastic to meet up and fish again. I still lull myself to sleep with the memories of my first trip out to Monomoy and I was lucky enough to be out the same day as you and your two sons. If I remember rightly both slightly the worse for wear. Something to do with Jamie's crew the night before and a dark brew sold in a glass in Squires.
I will never forget that fog that came down so quickly that it totally blanked out our view of land and we were a long way out. It did clear but I must confess if I had been on my own I would have felt a lot uneasy even with the limited benifit of a not so good compass bearing I had taken just before all sight of land was lost. The flats are just stunning and only 24 weeeks away.

Yes, those are the correct dates. Judging from last year if you can still fish after that you are a better man than I, although each year is different.

Sean, I am about 90% sure I will be attending the spring clave. I have a conflicting event in Kansas that is tempting to attend, that I have been foregoing the Cave the last few years to go to it. Too many things to do, not enough weekends.:frown: I will make my decision in a week or so. But to be honest I cannot see a trip out west this year due to funds or lack there of.

So plan on me being there and I will confirm shortly. Thank you for the generous offer of a place to lay my head. As far as the Yak goes I may need one yet. However I have a Pungo and still want to get a SOT. I will sort the Yak deal out as things evolve

FYI, I can put up about 4 guys(maybe more) at my place. 3/10 mile walk to Ridgevale beach if there is any problems with overnights. Spring fishing off Bucks Creek or the front beach (5 minute walk and inbetween regular clave trips) is usually very productive in the spring. Just let me know in advance.

Tom, Your best bet is to call as Redfisher says..... I know of guys doing that before the season begins. I do know a number of people who have slips but not sure if they will have them or the same one this coming season or if the Marina will allow a slip owner to "sub let" so to speak. My recollection is that they do not always allow that. Anyway, I remember Al D, I wish I had seen that move. I wonder what happened to him. This looks like a perfect opportunity to get started in northern flats fishing. I'll plan on being there and hope for some tutelage.
It's not really clear what I'm signing up for, so here are a few questions:
I can show up with a 26' CC, 12'/15HP skiff, kayak or waders. Which option makes the most sense?
Given the type of fishing/congregating, what am I missing by staying at home (Woods Hole, 50 mins away) as opposed to getting a room in Chatham.
I'm assuming this is a flats fly fishing event. Is there a plugging contingent as well?
Is 9' 9 wt the tackle of choice?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to seeing you all there.

titleguy
03-11-2008, 10:39 AM
Jim- If you're bringing your boat, you can run out there on your own- from the Stage Harbor cut to the tip is about 7 miles ( 20 min if you hammer down and it's not blowing to hard) . I have never fished the rips that early, but wit the number of squid aroud last year, it should be good.

The "Tip Rip" comes right to the beach at the tip on Monomoy, fun place for the two hander.

Josko - most fish from shore, waders and maybe the kayak. Due to distance most anglers stay over and fish two or three days. Last year people traveled from PA, NY, ME, NH, RI, UK, well, from all over. Saturday evening everyone meets at the Stone Horse for a BBQ - chicken/steak kabobs, grilled BFT, smoked bluefish, the list goes on and on. Beer, wine, and a few fine single malts make an appearance never to be seen again.

9' 9 WT is the tackle of choice...Friday a small group fish the CCC, fly and spin.

Jamie, sorry you can't make it this year - Iíll have a wee dram for you!

Looks like I might be there for a few days instead of the single day I was planning. My move to Denver is likely to happen at the end of April and I really want to make a Clave, so I'm going to push my 4 day June striper trip back to the week of the clave. Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Josko,
This is my first clave but from what I can gather, most people will fish from shore but a few bring kayaks too. I'll definitely be bringing my yak and plan on paddling out to start my paddle to the tip of Monomoy pretty early in the morning. I'll paddle one or two days and take the Rip Ryder ferry the other days since it's a long paddle. I'll have my fly rod but some spinning gear too so I can toss some 2 ounce jigs into the current and get them down to the really big fish. :) How much time I spend in the yak versus shore depends on how rough the water is.

Adrian

Hi Josko

Just saw your earlier post. It is primarilly a fly event but rumor has it there might be some plugging gear smuggled through.

Not sure how the sight fishing will be on the flats this early but there are usually plenty of fish inside. LAst year Juro, Sean and I had ridiculous "fish a chuck" activity to stripers finning for several hours. Of course it can rain and blow like hell so who knows. Things usually turn on at some point over the three day week-end. Sight fishing on the Ocean side is possible if the sun puts in an appearance.

There are a bunch of us getting together at the Canal on Friday for a pre-clave session with spey gear and conventionals. Large cows will be running and one of these days, someone is going to nail one on fly gear. Watch this space for updates on meeting location/times etc.

We are having a good lacrosse season in NC now, and it looks like the team that I am coaching will be in the playoffs that weekend. I can't miss that and it wouldn't be fair to the kids.
I will get almost 3 weeks on Cape beginning with the Memorial Day Saturday, and then back again in mid June.
I look forward to seeing all my New England buddies at that time.
Have a great clave and have a drink for me.
Cheers,
Dennis aka rooster:frown:

Dennis, I did not know you were coaching NC. My son Jim is captain of the St. Anselm team and they are doing well in Division 2... and may make the playoffs.... Anyway, the NCAA's are at Foxboro stadium for all divisions so I hope I will see you there. I will e-mail you. I also did not know that the playoffs would be the clave weekend...if Jim's team is in I won't be at the clave either. I suppose Hopkins and Duke will be in the final four.... and I know NC is in that class as well. St A's is playing the number 1 team in division 2 this weekend - LeMoyne.

Hey John,
The "playoffs" that my team will be in are a jr. high program in NC.
Good luck with your son's team. I'll keep track of them. We do get to head up to Duke and Chapel Hill to see the games, and I do track my old alma matta, Cornell.
Just to clarify your email, I did play in Jr College, but did not make the cut at Cornell...., when I transferred there in 76.
Maybe I'll see you in Foxboro, if not it will be the at the beach.
Cheers,
DK

Thanks for the clarification Dennis, one way or another I expect to hook up with you this year. Jim;s team lost 9-5 to LeMoyne... a good game though.

What should I be thinking of for flies in May on Chatham flats?

I just found out that there are five students at the kung fu academy who will be testing for their black belts very soon. I've know these kids for many years, and wouldn't miss their tests for the world.

Guess what date their tests are scheduled for? May 17th.

I'm deeply disappointed at the timing of this, but I'm also extremely proud of these kids. My priorities lie with them, as there will be other fishing opportunities. I hope those of you who attend the clave have a great time, and I'll be catching up with all of you at a later date.

Josko,

Pretty simple. Olive over white clousers, maybe a couple of white deceivers if there's squid around, Ray's Fly (flatwing) and maybe a couple of big herring patterns.

You definitely don't have to over think the fly thing. These fish won't be difficult this time of year They'll eat just about anything you put in front of them.

Well this stinks. My buddies can't move our June trip to the week of the clave, and I leave for Colorado on 4/21 and start my new job on 4/28. I was going to be commuting back and forth for a month or two so I could have come to the clave on the weekend, but my wife canned that plan by deciding to come out to CO permanently on May 2nd with the kids. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to make a clave. :( :( :(

Hi Dave
I was about to ask the same thing.
Thanks for the info.

What size flies though?

Thanks

Pete

Pete and Josko- 2s, 1s, 1/0s for the clousers. I fished chart/white size 1 last year almost exclusively and did fine. When I wasn't using that I was using a 2/0 big eye deceiver and hammered them. My buddy Dave fished nothing but an ornage/pink/yellow hollow fleye, probably a size 1 and he hammered them as well.

Ninjas these days...

Back in my day, we had to learn how to will time to a halt, our Master would then Astrally project himself to the Dojo to judge our test (which involved killing the other four students with chop sticks, the Murphy "Can Openner," various gonad shots and a stale piece of bread)...

Oh yeah thats right you study Kung Fu not Karate...my mistake

Seriously, there will be other times like the week before, the week after...and all the days before the moon explodes.

I was disappointed when HBO decided to not do a second season. Not sure where the story was going or what it was about but the characters were great (played by a lot of "Deadwood" alumni). I think HBO blew it, that it was like really fine music or a fine single malt, an aquired taste with great reward.

I was very curious about where it was going.....
But well done ..... in an off beat way.

Pete- I have been searching for the appropriate quote for your "pledge"

came up with two:

"Water taken in moderation cannot hurt anybody." Mark Twain

"Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess. " Oscar Wilde

I will be down there fishing 5/3 and 5/4 as well. Have to drop off old boat to buyer and pick new, to me, boat and then well, I'll need a test drive and a rod and ...

I just got back from 2 weeks vacation and realised i'd not booked the motel. :whoa:

they are now full on Saturday night - I have a room for Thursday and Friday, and i've asked Matt to let me know if anyone cancels.

If not, anyone got a spare bed or couch I can crash on Saturday ? - I will pony up half the room fee.

you should be warned though, that I snore like an F-15 on reverse thrusters - at camp sites i've had campers from other tents complain . . . .

I need to change some details of my plan. I plan to be down late that Saturday night the 17th, because I have to attend a graduation party for a friend's daughter and have a stop at at High school reunion. So , to Larry and any other's planning on staying at CAC...plan on Saturday night and Sunday night if that works for you. Right now my plan will be to fish Sunday and Monday. Mark, you can stay at CAC those nights if you are stuck.

Don't fret about fishing locations, best tides, right flies, or conditions for a memorable Spring Clave. I for one, and a lot of others will be around to give advice, or tag along with us. We've got a great fishery on the Cape, and members of the forum receive preferred status.

Maybe someone could do a "sticky" sign-up sheet??? If there are as many as it seems planning on attending, Rip Ryder should have some advance notice in ref to how many are planning to go to SB. If Juro has something up his sleeve for dinner, Sat night, he is going to need to have head count. Just a thought!!!

Sounds like a good time is going to be had:D Everyone go up the sign up sheet & post a message or send me a PM. I will not read this thread transfer the names.

Juro are we going to have a BBQ type thing where we all pitch in with food? Please elaborate on the festivities planned so we can prepare.
