I finnally did it. I cought a 6 or 7 inch smallie on a black bugger. It was so cool , I was about to recast, and lifted the line up preparing for a role cast when I felt it. I jerked up my rod. Dang I had a fish on... It kinda freaked me out. I really didnt know what to do ... lol So I let him take some line, then I slowly worked him in; and netted him.
What a great morning.....
Welcome to the Clan of the Wooley Bugger!!!!! When all else fails this fly will catch anything!!!!!! I've caught largemouth bass on large (5 inch) buggers. It is an absolute rush!!
That's awesome, today I caught MY first fish with a fly setup. I was using a small white popper and nabbed a nicely sized bluegill. I then caught several more panfish in the next half hour using the same popper. Addicting, I wish I had started at the BEGINNING of the season....

You might want to try sponge spiders for bluegills. That's what I've had the best luck with. I have black (favorite), white (second favorite) and brown spiders. I have caught small bass on them too.
Best of luck to you... even this late in the season Send us some pics if you catch something really cool please.
I have done real well fishiong for sunnies and crappys with olive and brown nymths, duns, cadis, and red worms work well fished slowly. In fact the red worms seem to be pretty deadly on crappys.
It took me a few months of fly fishing for trout before netting the first one. One thing that challenged me was the fact that these months were spent fishing in the Cherokee National Park in Gatlinburg, TN. Geeze...if I knew then what I know know I would have driven down to North Georgia to catch some stockers and left the wild bows and brookies alone.
Congrats on the first fish on a fly. Once I started catching fish on a fly (trout / stripers) I wanted to hang up the spinner'. Heh...I even tried catching catfish on a fly...
When going after smallies or largemouths, does the color of the wooly bugger matter? Early in the season I have luck with 2" clousers on a sinking line, but during the warm summer months, especially at dusk, poppers are my choice. When a rising smallie slams the popper...that's what I call fun!

I have caught bass on every color I've tried except pink, but then again I'm not sure I've tried pink. That being the case it's still hard to beat black, brown, or yellow.

I don't know why I have not used many wooly buggers when going after bass. My experience is that bass are not that discriminating. However, I never had any luck with black wooly buggers, hence my question. Now pink is an interesting choice. It would make for an interesting experiment. Nothing like a new challenge!
