Wind River canyon a few days ago. Superb fishing despite the 100 degree air temps and 75+ degree afternoon water temps! It's not a #'s thing there, it's a SIZE thing! Everything caught was above 18". Excellent day on the water. Here are a few shots. Sorry, no pics of the bigger fish or any Browns....due to the water temps we left the hogs in the water and revived and released them without fumbling around with the camera.

I HIGHLY recommend you fish this beautiful stretch of river...it's on the Reservation outside of Thermopolis...

Nice pictures, we roasted on the Big Horn as well. The water was in the high 40s low 50s so when the wind was right a cold blast would cool you down every now and then. You have to pay to fish the reservation don't you, how much is it? Can you float in a drift boat or do you need a raft? Also how do you run the shuttle?

thanks
Brad

Well... you need a Tribal license in addition to a regular WY license and conservation stamp to fish on the reservation. The Wind River canyon is off limits to floating NON-COMMERCIALLY---i.e. you need to go with a guide. There is only ONE outfitter that is allowed a permit, (Wind River Canyon Whitewater and Fishing). They also have permits on the BH and the upper Wind around Crowheart---highly recommend that as well!

Wading in the canyon is allowed, again...with the tribal lic. and WY lic. However, the water is TOUGH to wade and with the fish on the move in the summer I wouldn't advise it. The access is tretcherous as well on the upper section. Not to mention, there is a low fish count so you'd have top cover some ground in the summer months tobe successful and that really isn't an option. They only have rafts floating the upper section....no way a drift boat of any sort would make it through the class IV's for most of the season. WF driftboats with high sides could be used on the lower. One more thing to note....there is only 1 boat PER DAY on both the upper and lower and they give each section a rest for a couple days after about 10 days of fishing!

If you get a chance, it's worth the $$$. Coming from an ex-guide's point of view, it sure is nice to have someone row for you and put you on fish all day!!!! The guides up there are top notch and most importantly, they really care about the health of the fishery.

Right now we are searching for places to drift ourselves, but I will keep that spot in my mind. Thanks for the detailed response.

Sounds like you're up here for a while??? Why not hit the Missouri? Water temps are reasonable...for the weather. The upper Madison is fishing decent with the bumped up flows from Hebgen lake. The South Fork is good in the mornings. Box Canyon of the Henry's Fork is still fishing great too! You could also spend some time on the Snake in Jackson Hole...mornings are still good out there.
