It's going to be very hard to concentrate on work today. My mind will be on the flats of Chatham while Jim or Ron and anyone else there is hooking into fresh arrived, sight fished linesiders of my dreams. Low wind, lots of sunshine and a great tide!

Ain't that the way it goes. Back door cold front has us set up for some squirlly mid May weather come this weekend. It does warm up a bit Sat and sunday so though the sight fishing may be out, could be some good conditions for larger fish in the current.

This bluebird stuff is truly for the birds...fish standing on their nose for a shrimp fly is OK once...but I can't get enough of them crashing a pencil totally unannounced.....Can't wait for rain, East wind, and clouds at the Canal.....bring on the lousy weekend weather:D

John. I couldn't agree with you more! I love fishing in lousy weather. Just give me one good day when I can see the bass nose up on a fly and I am full circle for the entire year. Looks like this weekend will be right up your alley........I mean canal.

The inn in south dennis is open friday night. I've got the day to fish saturday. Basser probably can't be coaxed from the canal though.

So why wouldn't said bruisers eat the right fly presented correctly for the situation? Are they just out 1000 yards in the middle of the ditch? Curious minds want to know

Probably would, about 3 hours after the turn when the current is really rippin and the fish move within chunking range. A chunking " cast" is about equivalent in distance to a good roll cast. I actually catch more fish on a jig with a short cast under that tide phase. May need to work with someone with a pencil do get the big girls interested in eating a fly though. Flies are just too stealthy, it seems. Landing them after they bite is another story...

Juro I've been throwing the spey rod along with the conventional, there are times when the bruisers are out in the middle where it's fun to toss a plug to the next zipcode and connect with something large, we make a game of it, see who can toss the furthest and connect with some of the large that are rolling on top. With that said some of the largest fish caught are taken no more than 60'-80' from shore and closer. If you were to look at the canal in a cross sectional view you would see it's basicly u shaped, with it's sides at a gradual 45 degree angle, its this 45 degree angle that is the the major travel route, plus the structure of boulders that make great holding water ,just perfect for the spey/skagit approach I've been doing quite well with the long 2hand rod .:smokin: :hihi: :chuckle:
