: Belize: Late October or December?

I'm committed to heading for Ambergris Caye in Belize this year. I have two holes in my work schedule: the last two weeks of October, and the first week in December. Any veterans with a recommendation as to which time is the best, factoring in fishing and weather conditions? I hear it rains a ton in October, but December can be windy and rainy when cold fronts from the north pass through. I want to fish five days; a little rain/wind aren't problems, and a day or so waiting out bad weather is okay. I'm not concerned about a hurricane; I know they are rare, but possible. But I would hate to be washed out/blown out the five days I'm down there by more typical seasonal crummy weather. I'll be fly fishing, and while bonefish are the goal I might like to take a little time to chase permit or tarpon, if conditions look promising. Recommendations? Thanks in advance for any help.

Late Oct is still the tail end of hurricane season. I know you said you're not concerned about them, but it sounds like you've never been caught in one while on vacation. Trust me, it only has to happen to you once for you to avoid travel at all costs during hurricane season! :)

Overall the weather will be a little cooler and windier in Dec, but the fishing will probably be about the same.

I have been there in Oct and Nov. The closer you get to January the more chance of cold fronts, although they can pop up at anytime.

There are excellent bargains to be had at some of the better lodges that time of year since it is not peak season.

I would reccomend Turneffe Flats. The culture at Ambergris is geared towards tourists while Turneffe is more of a wilderness destination. There will be less tarpon at Turneffe but more and bigger bones and world-class permit. The secenery and wildlife is incredible too.

PM me if you want more info.

I was there last year (2006) at the first of Dec. We stayed about 6 miles north of San Pedro in a place called Blue Reef and it was very nice. Prices weren't bad becouse of time of year. All thier amenitys come from the USA so the beds were actually comfortable for a change of most of Belize. One of the nice things about this spot is that there is a very wadeable and productive flat right in frount of the place that had tailing Bonefish in both morning and evening. it is along way from town so if you want night life its not there but I was there to fish and my wife just wanted to relax in the sun. I got a guide 4 of the 7 days we were there(we also dive) I went with Abbie Marin ( and would highly recomend him if you are a decent caster, if not you might want someone a little more laid back. I'd fish with him any day. We could find Bones almost any time if you wanted smaller fish and with work you can find some 3-5lbers. My bigest fish, 6lbs, came on my own right out in frount of the lodge. I had shots at Permit 2 days of the 4 and landed 1 of 18 lbs, very nice fish! also Abie was able to get us into Tarpon 2 of the days weather permiting. So I did get my slam on the one day. Poons are all small this time of year about 10-40 lbs max. Weather was cloudy and windy a fair amount but it was still a great time. I wish I was going with you!
